Recently, Firaxis Games studio went through a layoff event. The news of the layoffs came from the developers themselves, who were affected by these layoffs, on social networks. After that, 2K Games, the parent company of Firaxis, confirmed the information about the layoffs in an official statement for Game Developer, made it clear to its fans with what purpose it was necessary to remove several people.
Layoffs at Firaxis Games: How 2K Games is Trying to Save Civilization VII
In a recent comment to Game Developer, representatives from 2K Games shared that Firaxis Games is currently undergoing a significant restructuring effort. This initiative is designed to streamline operations and, ultimately, enhance the levels of creativity, flexibility, and collaboration across the organization.
While 2K Games did not provide specific reasons for this restructuring, it’s possible that the decision stems from the lackluster performance of Sid Meier’s Civilization VII. Just a month ago, Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two, acknowledged that the game’s launch was not as robust as anticipated. However, he remained optimistic, stating that the situation is gradually improving, and he expects that Civilization VII will find its success in the future.
Details regarding the number of layoffs have not been disclosed by 2K Games, but sources speaking to Game Developer indicate that dozens of employees were affected by these changes.
This isn’t the first time Firaxis Games has faced layoffs; back in May 2023, reports surfaced that about 30 employees were let go during a previous round of cuts. Such ongoing adjustments within the company suggest a focus on revitalizing its workforce and enhancing overall performance moving forward.
