VALORANT’s announced Agent Gear revision will change the requirements for obtaining character items. Riot says progress towards each item will depend on playing its associated agent after patch 13.06. Players will still need Kingdom Credits to unlock the item, and anything already unlocked will remain in their collection. The current 13.05 notes announce the change in advance; the new system is planned for 13.06.

Playing the agent and paying for gear are separate steps

The new requirement concerns the connection between an item and experience playing its associated agent. Riot is not describing a system where any match automatically grants the item for free. Kingdom Credits remain part of the unlock process, so meeting a play requirement and obtaining the gear are different stages.

That distinction matters when collecting an item belonging to an agent you rarely play. Earning currency while using other characters will not necessarily satisfy the new requirement. Check both conditions separately: how much progress is needed with the associated agent and how many Kingdom Credits the item costs. Completing one condition does not automatically mean the other has been met.

Already unlocked items are not being taken away

Riot explicitly says previously unlocked gear will remain available. A player does not need to re-earn an owned item solely because the progression system changes. This protects the difference between something already in the collection and something merely visible as a future target.

Before the transition, check actual ownership rather than relying on a remembered purchase plan. An item that appears in an agent’s gear list is not necessarily an item already unlocked. Keeping track of the specific desired item also prevents confusion with unrelated store cosmetics or other progression rewards, which are not automatically covered by an announcement about Agent Gear.

The 13.05 notes describe the Agent Gear revision as coming with 13.06. The planned next-patch date is September 22. Until the new system arrives, an explanation should keep the current unlock arrangement separate from the announced future requirements. A menu that has not changed yet is not evidence that an account has missed an update.

The timing also means that final implementation details should come from the next patch and its in-game descriptions. The earlier notice explains the direction and the preservation of owned gear. It does not give a complete numerical table of play requirements for every agent and item. Inventing a fixed number of wins or matches would make the explanation less useful, not more precise.

Use the current menu to compare specific items

A practical preparation is to identify the gear actually wanted and check its current state. Is it already owned? Is it available to unlock now? Does the player have the required Kingdom Credits? Those questions create a clear account-specific picture without assuming every player has the same progression history.

The announcement should not become pressure to spend currency on everything before a deadline. An item that is not wanted does not become necessary because its acquisition rules are changing. For a player who does want a particular currently available item, the existing menu gives a more reliable answer than a generic recommendation to empty a credit balance.

Do not assume every mode contributes equally

Riot’s initial explanation says gear will be tied to playing the associated agent, but does not establish a complete list of eligible modes, thresholds or special exceptions. It would be premature to promise that a short custom session, a particular alternative mode or a fixed number of victories satisfies an item requirement.

After 13.06 arrives, inspect the item’s actual progress display and any explanatory text. If a qualifying match appears not to count, compare the stated conditions with the match that was played. The relevant details are the agent, mode and requirement, not an assumption that the system rewards any time spent with the game open.

The change makes the chosen agent part of the goal

The overall effect is to bring Agent Gear closer to experience with that particular character. For someone who regularly plays the agent, the new requirement may align with normal sessions. For someone collecting an item from an unfamiliar agent, it creates a reason to learn that agent’s role rather than treat the gear solely as a currency purchase.

The confirmed boundaries remain simple: existing unlocks stay owned, Kingdom Credits remain required and the revised play-based qualification belongs to 13.06. Exact progress targets must come from the final system. Keeping those boundaries clear avoids both needless concern about losing items and false promises about how quickly new ones can be obtained.
