PUBG Update 43.1 changes several advantages that made light machine guns unusually effective: the speed of aiming down sights, recoil reduction from firing positions, extra damage to vehicles and world availability. The underlying recoil patterns remain unchanged, according to Krafton. That distinction matters when adjusting to the M249, RPD or MG3: the patch weakens positional benefits rather than replacing each weapon with a completely different recoil pattern.

The RPD in PUBG's official weapon trailer, illustrating the light machine gun category.

Aim before exposing yourself

The announced transition into aiming down sights increases from 0.30 to 0.37 seconds. That is a small amount of time in isolation, but it matters when a player starts aiming only after an opponent is already visible and firing. An LMG still offers sustained fire from a large magazine; it is less suited to pretending that preparation time does not matter.

A practical adjustment is to establish the angle and aim before exposing the character where possible. This is not a promise that pre-aiming wins every exchange. It reduces one avoidable delay while leaving target movement, distance and the enemy’s position as separate problems. Players should assess that timing change independently from the stance changes, because the two can affect the same encounter for different reasons.

Standing, crouching and lying down give less help with recoil

Krafton says the basic recoil values and recoil patterns remain the same for these machine guns. The changes affect the extra recoil control provided by the firing position. For the RPD, that benefit falls by 10 percent when standing, 17 percent when crouching and 27 percent when lying down. For the M249, the reduction is 17 percent when crouching and 27 percent when lying down.

For the MG3, the listed reductions are 15 percent when standing and 17 percent when crouching. Krafton does not list a new reduction for firing the MG3 while lying down. Check the figures for the weapon and position you use rather than applying one gun’s changes to another. These percentages concern the additional recoil-control effect; they do not directly state the total recoil increase for each shot.

Vehicle damage multipliers in Update 43.1
Weapon Previous multiplier New multiplier
M249 1.1 1.0
RPD 1.1 1.0
MG3 1.25 1.1

Vehicle damage loses some of its extra multiplier

Aiming with the RPD in the developer's gameplay demonstration.

The M249 and RPD vehicle damage multiplier falls from 1.1 to 1.0. The MG3 multiplier falls from 1.25 to 1.1, retaining a smaller bonus. These values concern damage to vehicles. They should not be applied to damage against an unarmoured player or used as proof that every weapon’s base bullet damage has been reduced.

For a squad trying to stop a vehicle, sustained fire and a useful angle still matter. The reduced multiplier makes it less sensible to assume that the same brief burst will always disable a vehicle at the same moment as before. Exact shots-to-destroy figures would also need the vehicle’s condition, the hit location and other applicable modifiers. The patch’s multiplier alone does not establish a universal destruction count.

A loot plan should not depend on finding a specific LMG

World spawn rates for the RPD and M249 are reduced by 30 percent. That is a relative reduction in their spawn rate, not a statement that either weapon now appears in exactly 30 percent of locations. The change also does not establish an identical world-spawn adjustment for the MG3.

Players who prefer a machine gun should carry another usable weapon while searching buildings for equipment. Visiting several extra buildings to find one exact gun can cost time and leave the squad in a worse position. Compare the weapon already in hand with the risk of continuing the search. Finding the preferred gun is less important than being able to defend yourself while moving towards a safe part of the map.

Compare similar firing conditions in training

An official PUBG gameplay image. Weapon choice and firing position are separate decisions.

To understand the recoil adjustment, use the same weapon, target distance and attachments across standing, crouching and prone attempts. Keep bursts comparable. If weapon, stance and range all change at once, it becomes difficult to identify whether a missed burst came from the patch’s positional change or a completely different condition.

The result of that test is information about controllability for the player, not proof of the global competitive meta. Krafton says it acted after reviewing gameplay data and feedback, but the notes do not publish a complete post-update win-rate comparison. Claims that an LMG is now unusable, or that another weapon has become objectively best, require more than a few training bursts or one difficult match.

PC and console are on different rollout dates

The PC maintenance window for 43.1 was September 10 from 00:00 to 08:30 UTC. Console deployment is scheduled for September 17 from 01:00 to 09:00 UTC, with times subject to change. Reports from people playing the PC version may therefore describe weapon behaviour that has not yet changed on a console. Check the installed version before comparing the two.

The main lesson of the balance pass is preparation. Aim early, understand the changed stance benefit and avoid relying on the old extra vehicle damage. The class retains its large-magazine identity, while the patch asks players to pay more attention to the conditions under which they use it.
