Square Enix cannot yet guarantee that the final game in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy will be released on physical media. Director Naoki Hamaguchi admitted in an interview with GamesRadar+ that the team is holding internal discussions about the exact SKU lineup, but no final decision has been made yet. Meanwhile, Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled for release in spring 2027 simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC—meaning that the game formally falls within the “safe window” before Sony ceases production of physical discs for new PlayStation games in January 2028. But the problem, as it turns out, isn’t Sony’s timing.
Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth were released on physical media—in fact, Rebirth required two discs, while the Remake and Rebirth Twin Pack were contained on three Blu-ray discs. Revelation will be larger in scale—it surpasses both previous games in terms of content—meaning a physical release would require at least two, if not three, discs. The production cost of such a bundle—not to mention logistics and distribution—becomes a significant economic factor for the publisher. Paying homage to collectors who carefully preserve their boxes on shelves clashes with the shrinking margins dictated by the digital age.
Hamaguchi, however, remains unfazed. He made it clear that as a fan, he loves seeing players bring boxes to meetups for autographs and considers it a unique part of gaming culture that would be a shame to lose. But he also frankly admitted, “I’m working to provide some kind of physical edition.” And this is crucial—”some kind of physical edition” doesn’t necessarily mean a traditional disc in a box. Hamaguchi admitted that it could be a box with a code inside, a key card like Nintendo, or a boot disc. The gap between a “disc” and a “box with a code” is colossal for collectors.
Why hasn’t a decision been made yet, if Hamaguchi himself is keen to preserve the physical media? The answer is multi-layered. First, the final say lies with Square Enix as the publisher, not the director. Second, each platform has its own requirements: Nintendo has its own cartridge size limitations, Sony has its own, and packaging a universal physical edition for all target platforms is a technically challenging task. Third, the industry is confidently moving toward digital: GTA 6 has already received a “physical edition” exclusively as a code in a box. Square Enix, apparently, is embracing the same logic, but is still hesitating with a final verdict.
For collectors pining for the chance to display the final game of the trilogy alongside Remake and Rebirth, this news is terrifying. Polygon has suggested a promising scenario: even if Revelation doesn’t receive a traditional disc at launch, Square Enix could release a complete physical edition of the entire trilogy later. This makes sense—a three-disc box set would be the perfect package for fans and would adequately address the aesthetic impact of the saga’s conclusion.
For now, all we can do is wait for an official announcement. Speculating ahead of time is pointless. Square Enix is obligated to provide a definitive answer before pre-orders begin, and there’s still time until spring 2027—though not as much as we’d like.
