Ubisoft has officially launched full-scale development on a new game in the Far Cry universe, codenamed Kodiak. The project, which insiders describe as being extremely persistent, passed the concept stage in early July 2026 and has entered active production at Vantage Studios. Kodiak will permanently replace the canceled extraction shooter Maverick, shifting the focus to an open world and user experience.

Project Kodiak: What is this game and how does it differ from Maverick?

The Far Cry franchise is showing signs of life again, but not in the way many expected. The experimental extraction shooter Maverick, which had been in development for several years, has officially been scrapped – Ubisoft has decided to completely abandon the PvPvE formula due to production difficulties and changing market trends. It was on this foundation that Kodiak was later created: an open-world first-person shooter with a primary focus on deep player interaction and player-generated storytelling.

The new title borrows only a few technical elements from its cancelled predecessor, radically changing the gameplay philosophy itself. The Vantage Studios team, led by Charlie Guillemot, is involved in development. However, a quick release is not expected: the project is in the early stages of production, and its full launch is several years away.

Far Cry 7 (Project Blackbird) Development: What’s Known About the Sequel?

In parallel with Kodiak, the French publisher continues work on the next title in the series, Far Cry 7, known internally as Project Blackbird. The game is being developed with an eye toward co-op and multiplayer elements. Internal delays and personnel changes have left their mark on the schedule, but production has now returned to a stable pace.

Charlie Guillemot directly called Blackbird an “impressive” project and referred to it as “Act One.” This is a clear hint that the seventh installment will lay the technological and narrative foundation for future releases in the franchise.
