Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced – Record Ratings & DLC Controversy - Image 1

The remake was released on July 9, 2026, for PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Ubisoft rebuilt the game using a modern version of the Anvil engine—the same one used in the series’ latest installments. The result: 2 million copies sold in the first 24 hours and a peak of over 100,000 concurrent players on Steam. On Metacritic, the user score settled at 9.0 out of 10 based on nearly 230 reviews. This is higher than the scores for Assassin’s Creed II (8.7), the original Black Flag (8.4), and certainly Valhalla (6.1).

However, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. On Steam, the rating dropped to “Mixed”—hovering around 70–76% positive reviews. The reason? DLC packs totaling around $85 that are offered for purchase right at launch. Buyers of the $60–$70 Deluxe Edition discovered that even that version didn’t include all the add-ons. Ubisoft responded to one negative review by stating: “The standard version is the complete game. The DLC is entirely optional.” The community remains divided.

Gameplay changes: new mechanics and remake improvements

The combat system has been radically overhauled. A successful parry opens up a sequence of up to four consecutive finishing blows. A guard-breaking mechanic has been introduced, along with weapon-specific heavy attacks. A new dodge attack becomes a “perfect dodge” with increased damage if timed precisely.

Most interesting of all are the adaptive enemies. Opponents learn the player’s tactics: if you overuse parrying, they start using unblockable attacks; if you kick frequently, they easily dodge out of the way. Players will need to mix up their moves, weapons, and gadgets. Parkour is more responsive: Edward can now wall-run and perform free-running jumps. Stealth finally has a dedicated crouch button, allowing players to hide at any moment. The “Observe” mechanic from Assassin’s Creed Shadows—highlighting enemies via Eagle Vision—has been added.

Naval combat: controls for the Jackdaw have been improved. The major technical achievement is the elimination of loading screens when transitioning between sea and land; disembarking at ports and exploring islands is now seamless.

Comparison with the 2013 original: graphics, gameplay, and story additions

Visually, the remake is a new game rather than just a remaster. The 2013 original suffered from the “muddy era” of game graphics—dark colors, glassy eyes, and unnatural skin tones. Resynced features vibrant colors, dynamic weather, and realistic shadows and lighting. Comparisons by ElAnalistaDeBits confirm that character models, animations, vegetation, and water have been rebuilt from scratch.

The core story remains unchanged—Edward Kenway, the Caribbean, and the Golden Age of Piracy—but the modern-day office scenes in Montreal have been completely cut. Multiplayer and the original DLCs are not included. Instead, actor Matt Ryan returned to provide voice work and record new scenes. Additional story arcs featuring Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet have been added, while tedious tailing missions have been removed.

Why users are giving record-breaking ratings: an analysis of positive reviews

The main reason Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is being praised is the balance struck between preserving the spirit of the original and implementing modern improvements. The interface is now highly customizable: players can choose presets or manually toggle individual elements. Underwater mechanics have been updated, and new sea shanties have been added. All side activities—hunting, treasure hunting, tavern mini-games, and legendary ships—have been overhauled from the ground up.

Critics have also praised the game highly: it holds a score of 84 on Metacritic and 85% on OpenCritic. This marks the series’ best performance since the release of the original Black Flag. Ubisoft calls Resynced a “love letter” to the community. This success is critical for the company, which began 2026 by closing two studios, cancelling six games, and delaying seven releases.
