Developers Axolot Games have announced that Scrap Mechanic will leave Early Access on July 24, 2026. Version 1.0, codenamed “Drilling Thunder,” will bring a new story chapter, fresh biomes, enemies, a boss, fire physics, and a graphical upgrade. However, there’s a catch: the developers haven’t yet revealed the full list of changes—details will become available closer to release.

The game spent over ten years in Early Access, starting on January 20, 2016. During this time, 3.4 million copies were sold, and the online player base peaked at 46,643. Scrap Mechanic is currently available on Steam at a 33% discount, and we’ll break down what exactly will be included in the final version in this article.

Scrap Mechanic Gameplay Changes with Update 1.0: A Complete Overview of Mechanics and New Features

New Biomes, Enemies, and a Boss—What’s Coming in Scrap Mechanic 1.0

Update 1.0 will add a new story chapter to the game—a continuation of the story fans have been waiting for years. It will bring fresh biomes to explore, new enemy types, and at least one boss.

Judging by the official trailer, players will encounter giant machines with menacing red lights, drone loot, and a sort of combat coliseum. The update’s title, “Drilling Thunder,” clearly indicates a focus on drilling equipment—numerous drilling rigs are visible in the trailer.

However, the developers are still keeping the exact list of enemies, biomes, and boss fight mechanics under wraps. There are mentions of a redesigned location generation system in open sources, but there’s no official confirmation—we’re treating this as unconfirmed information.

Fire Physics and Construction—How Will Gameplay Change?

One of the key officially confirmed features is fire physics. Fire is expected to receive an advanced simulation: fires will spread, destroy structures, and impact gameplay in a fundamentally different way.

In addition, additional construction parts will be added to the game. The specifics haven’t been specified yet, but given the game’s ten-year history in Early Access and community demand, it’s likely that the existing construction mechanics will be expanded. The trailer hints at improved drilling equipment with an emphasis on reliability and modular adaptability.

Scrap Mechanic has always attracted fans of deep crafting and modding. Version 1.0 will apparently focus on expanding these capabilities.

Graphics, Optimization, and Storyline – What Will Be Improved?

In addition to gameplay innovations, the developers promise a significant graphical upgrade. The game’s visuals will receive a significant improvement: crisper textures, smoother animations, and improved feedback when interacting with objects.

A key addition is improved optimization. For a game where large-scale construction has historically placed a strain on the system, this is a critical improvement. The developers also mention Russian language support: this is a long-awaited feature for the Russian-speaking community.

Regarding the story, the game will feature a new story chapter. Whether it’s called “Chapter 2” is an open question: the wiki lists it as such, but there’s no official confirmation. One thing is clear: after ten years in Early Access, Scrap Mechanic will finally have a complete story.
