We’ve encountered various platformers that showcase the delightful journeys of adorable, yarn-like creatures—immediately bringing to mind titles like Kirby’s Epic Yarn and Yoshi’s Woolly World on the Wii and Wii U. However, Unravel, published by Electronic Arts, clearly aspired to something more profound and artistic, potentially resonating more closely with the emotional depth found in Ori and the Blind Forest. This game invites players into a beautifully crafted world that emphasizes connection and exploration in ways that are both innovative and heartfelt.

What’s truly delightful about Unravel is the element of “kindness.” Imagine a sweet creature named Yarny, woven by his grandmother’s loving hands, coming to life and setting off on a magical journey through sunlit fields and forest edges, surrounded by migratory birds, rustling insects, and a riot of colors in bloom. His mission is to find his grandmother’s lost knitted heirlooms, return them to their home, and place them in a treasured family album. In this way, Yarny invisibly connects warm memories of people dear to his heart who once shared joyful moments together.

As he makes his way through this meticulously detailed world, Yarny encounters ghostly images of the past: children playing carefree, having fun by a crackling fire, conquering green hills, or thoughtfully gazing at the vast expanses of the ocean. These ephemeral scenes quickly disappear, as if dissolved in a gentle breeze, but if Yarny successfully completes his mission, they will come to life again on the pages of a memory album. This tiny character, made of threads of yarn, symbolically and literally acts as a connecting link, weaving memories of the past with the present into a warm and touching pattern of love, nostalgia and hope.
Yarni evokes memories of characters from various cartoons and fairy tales. Sometimes, like Kolobok, he escapes from his grandmother, leaping out of a window and diving headfirst into thrilling adventures that await him. Other times, resembling the Hedgehog in the Fog, he gazes in astonishment at the large animals he encounters—tiny Yarni finds even a crab and an otter to be truly remarkable and a bit intimidating.

Yet, there will be much more than just sunny meadows, strawberry patches, and endless charm. Yarni will have to run from that same otter, evading crashing waves and landslides that threaten to engulf him. He will crawl through a wasteland of toxic debris, navigating hazardous obstacles, and slog through a fierce blizzard, always risking being swept away by the relentless wind. He might be crushed by heavy machinery or snatched away by a lurking crow, leaving him to navigate a world full of both wonder and danger.
Cheeky hero
In this vast and perilous world, little Yarny can only counter his fears with agility, cleverness, and, of course, the vibrant yarn from which he is made. With his nimble, knitted hands, he skillfully flings his yarn like a lasso to latch onto branches, nails, boards, and any other suitable objects within reach. This unique ability allows him to navigate the environment with creativity. Once attached, Yarny can pull himself up to greater heights or swing on the rope, leaping further into the unknown—catching onto other branches and nails with his knitted “grappling hook” mid-flight, all while feeling the thrill of adventure.

With this lasso, we can hoist ourselves up or descend gracefully, affecting various elements around us in imaginative ways. We can lower levers to unlock new paths, press down branches to jump onto them, or carefully extract boards, boxes, or pine cones from beneath heaps of debris. Each action feels meaningful as Yarny interacts with his surroundings. Then, with determination, Yarny drags these items to use as platforms or weights, creatively solving puzzles. For instance, he can lower a swing from the right side to gain momentum or press a button to trigger mechanisms. Every moment is an exploration, filled with challenges that Yarny faces with bravery and ingenuity. At last, Yarny can create a unique knitted trampoline by stretching threads between two specially prepared points. With a push-off, he can leap higher into the air, or even drag the same box or pinecone along the delicate thread.
Curiously, all these actions lead our hero to lose weight visibly. The thread continually unravels, and the less thread there is, the weaker Yarny becomes. In certain situations, he appears thin and forlorn, struggling to move his knitted legs. This typically happens on a set schedule in specific areas designed for these moments. Yet players must constantly search the levels for clumps of wool that will help revive Yarny’s energy, agility, and fullness, restoring his vibrant spirit. This concept also forms the backbone of the “checkpoint” system, which adds to the gameplay experience.
Dreams of something more
It’s easy to imagine the difficult tasks and mysteries Yarny will face on his heartfelt journey. The core essence of the gameplay remains the same: the player controls the hero, who swings, slides, jumps on improvised trampoline supports and moves the necessary objects using thread bridges. The gameplay is captivating with its involvement in the process of dragging, colliding, destroying and deforming objects to clear the way for further progress. As the player moves forward, the challenges become more and more difficult, and the developers periodically add unexpected and funny tasks. For example, you will need to lure a crab into a trap, quickly escape from a persistent otter or hide in a bucket, escaping from annoying birds. In some scenes, you will have to participate in a kind of “hide and seek” with the waves, maneuvering past treacherous whirlpools to remain unnoticed.

Despite its impressive and memorable moments, the overall experience of Unravel can feel a bit monotonous, especially when compared to the action-packed and fast-paced Ori and the Blind Forest. Unravel introduces the player to the basic principles of the game early on, immersing them in the adventure right away. However, as the game progresses, the element of surprise gradually gives way to predictability. While individual levels require thoughtful thinking from the player, creating tense sequences in which the player must save the helpless Yarny, overall the variety of tasks remains limited. Many fans may miss fresh ideas and innovative mechanics that could break the mold and give a completely new feeling to the gameplay.
The storyline ultimately leaves much to be desired. While there are genuinely poignant moments—such as when we spot the same knitted bracelet in a photo that Yarni painstakingly sought out—the overarching concept of linking memories between parents and children, along with connections across generations, feels overly simplistic and predictable. The conclusion also strikes a rather ordinary note; one anticipates something far more compelling and dramatic from a game that promises emotional depth.

The emotional bond with the main character forms quickly and effortlessly, and you often find yourself wanting to cheer him on, shouting, “Keep your chin up, Yarni!” It’s these moments that evoke empathy, yet they can’t quite elevate the overall experience to the level one hopes for.
Conclusion
Ultimately, the debut creation of the Swedish studio Coldwood Interactive appears before players as a bright, touching and visually impressive game with an irresistible main character. Despite the fact that this work deservedly received high marks from critics and approval of the public, it slightly lacks the depth and revolutionary nature that brought such platformers as Braid or Ori and the Blind Forest to cult status. However, there is no doubt that the Coldwood Interactive team has enormous creative potential, and it is likely that in the future they will be able to present something even more interesting and large-scale.
Pros:
-
Successful graphics, capable of fully immersing the player in the atmosphere of what is happening;
-
Unusual, charismatic protagonist, evoking sincere emotions and empathy;
-
An original concept that captivates and holds attention throughout the game.
Cons:
-
The game mechanics become predictable and monotonous over time, offering virtually no new challenges;
-
The plot leaves some important storylines without a logical conclusion, which may disappoint fans of well-developed stories.
