Every time the conversation turns to Diablo, passions boil: someone fiercely defends the cult classic, someone scolds it, and someone deifies it. And yet one thing remains unchanged – Diablo’s contribution to the industry cannot be ignored. Such phenomena do not pass by history – they are either learned from or tried to be repeated. These people are no strangers to building dark universes and slaying evil. And in 2012, they gave us Torchlight II, a sequel that took only the basics of the first game and reimagined and deepened the rest. Torchlight II isn’t trying to be the new Diablo. It goes its own way – brighter, more steamy and gunpowder-filled. Instead of Gothic cathedrals and cemeteries, there are steampunk guns, gears, mechanisms, and exotic monsters. Visually, everything resembles a cartoon fairy tale, but don’t be fooled – inside this colorful shell beats the heart of a dark, adult story. The plot may not reach the epic scale, but it respects its heroes. The characters familiar from the first game return – the meeting with each of them is significant, especially with the alchemist… but you’ll have to wait until the very end for him. Torchlight II is not only betting on fan service and atmosphere. From the very first minutes, the game offers to choose any of four difficulty levels, including hardcore – for those who like when death is final. Unlike the same Diablo, the difficulty here is punished not by taking away characteristics, but by strengthening enemies. The game is loyal to the player’s style: if you want, fight your way through, if you want, just enjoy the journey. The best part is that the reward does not depend on the difficulty level. Gold, drops, impressions – everything is equally available for both a nerd and a casual. You can only change the difficulty in multiplayer, but no one prevents you from choosing a comfortable level in a single-player game, continuing from the same place.
So no, this is not just “another Diablo clone.” This is a conscious attempt to revive the best traditions of the genre in a new guise. Torchlight II is when the old school meets fantasy and freedom. And it does it with dignity.

In Torchlight 2, you are not just given a hero – you are invited to choose an avatar of the adventure, the one through whose eyes you will see this fantasy world. And although the choice is limited to four archetypes, each of them is a whole universe of possibilities if you approach the matter with imagination.

Berserker – he is eager to fight face to face. A master of close combat, capable of tearing an enemy to pieces in a matter of seconds. But with a little effort, you can mold him into a real battle mage – although not a classic one, but very effective.

The Wanderer is your ideal companion if you prefer to act from a distance. Pistols, bows, crossbows – in his hands, any long-range tool becomes deadly. And with the right settings, he turns into a poisonous mage, no worse than Emberling himself.

Emberling is a child of magic and elementals. He is not good at close combat, but who would use a sword when you can summon a firestorm or an ice storm? If you like to play with your mind, not your muscles, your choice is obvious.

The Engineer is a true all-rounder. He can be anyone: a tank, a mage, a warrior, or even a summoner. This class is good because it gives you room for experimentation and adaptation to your play style.
You can slightly personalize your character – choose a gender, a couple of facial features, and, of course, a pet. And the choice here is pleasing: from a modest owl to an alpaca and even a panda. The choice of a pet has little effect on the gameplay, so take the one that pleases the eye.
The alpaca, by the way, is not just a cutie, but a reliable companion in battles. She, like any other pet, can temporarily change her shape and abilities if you feed her the right fish.
Each level is a chance to become stronger. You are given 5 attribute points and one skill point. Everything seems simple, but there are nuances:

Strength – is responsible for auto attacks and increases critical hits.

Dexterity – increases the chance of dodging and critical hits.

Magic – increases mana, damage from abilities and the chance to strike twice when using two identical weapons.

Endurance – makes you more resilient, stronger, and helps you use shields more effectively.
It is important to consider that some skills can also crit. Therefore, even if you play through magic, a couple of points in agility will not hurt. And you also need to understand what damage from abilities depends on: if from weapons – pump strength, if from the level – magic.

Each class has a unique passive that fills in battle:

Berserker with a full scale only deals critical hits.

Wanderer gets bonuses to crits and evasion.

Emberling uses abilities without spending mana, and even with increased damage.

The engineer can activate additional effects of his abilities when his scale is charged.
There is also a parallel development system – glory. It grows for killing bosses and elites, and for each new level gives you a bonus skill point.
The game will take you through colorful locations — in the spirit of the Diablo II style, but with pleasant cell-shading and juicy details. Yes, the fantasy setting does not offer anything fundamentally new: deserts, dungeons, forests, steppes. But it is all presented with soul and skill, and this is what creates the feeling of a real journey. The tasks here are also pleasing: in addition to the main line, you can always find side quests, often leading to new bosses. It’s a pity that the loot from them is not always impressive.
About things. Everything is classic: white – ordinary, green – with one bonus, blue – with two, orange – unique, and red – real legends. You can also collect sets – they give additional bonuses. True, you can put on almost any thing if you have reached the required level – even if the stats are not up to par. But whether it will be effective is a question. As is typical for an action RPG, you can insert boosters into your equipment: stones, skulls, eyes – with different effects, from elemental damage to mana regeneration.

Each zone has its own hub city. Here you can:

Buy items with unknown properties – a kind of roulette.

Insert or remove stones from equipment.

Contact the alchemist and the enchanter: the first is a local analogue of the Horadric Cube, the second adds bonuses to clothes for gold.
And, of course, fishing. It is not difficult, but surprisingly relaxing. The caught fish can be fed to a pet, changing its shape and abilities. And while you sit with a fishing rod – your partner calmly sorts out the inventory or conducts a dialogue with the NPC.
What to Do After Beating the Final Boss in Torchlight-Style Games
The real charm of this game is in the details – such seemingly insignificant ones as fishing. Even in places teeming with enemies, you can find bodies of water where you can catch rarer and more valuable trophies than in quiet zones. True, attempts to cast a fishing rod here are strictly limited, so that each cast becomes almost a gambling bet. But if all this fuss with bait and floats is not to your liking – no one will judge you. The developers have provided an alternative: buy dynamite, throw it into the water – and the whole catch will fly out to the shore itself. Convenient, albeit a little barbaric. Each zone keeps its secrets: levers, hidden mechanisms, artifacts – all this gives the player small but pleasant surprises. In addition, the game has secret portals to the underworld. It’s just a shame that behind the scary entourage there’s a regular experience grinding zone. But that’s not all: mysterious beasts roam the world, and when they disappear, they leave behind “the most ordinary portal.” Inside are trials, sometimes original, and the rewards are often generous and truly worthwhile. The good old scrolls haven’t disappeared either. Identification scrolls still reveal the secrets of items, but the portal now creates a stable passage – you can return through it as many times as you want.
You won’t be bored even after the final boss. When the world finally breathes a sigh of relief, you’ll have access to the map workshop. Here you can choose all sorts of scenarios with various modifiers – for those who want to challenge themselves or just level up and earn some money. But the opportunity to start a new game+ is much more interesting. By the time you complete your first playthrough, you’ll likely be level 50-52, and that’s where the real meat grinder begins: enemies grow with you, previously locked dungeons open up — for example, the ominous Tomb of Tarroch. Why ominous? Find out for yourself. No spoilers. Unfortunately, when you reach the maximum level of 100, all that’s left is gear grinding and those same cards. But the game does its best to keep you from getting bored. Almost all gear drops randomly, albeit adjusted for your level. Sometimes it’s annoying, but the excitement still remains.

And if boredom starts to creep in, call your friends. Everything feels different in co-op: more fun, more dynamic, and sometimes much more difficult. Enemies become stronger, appear in greater numbers, and receive buffs to strength and defense depending on the number of players in the squad. What your “glass gunner” used to easily mow down can now run up and take revenge. You’ll have to adapt.
But everyone has their own loot – no one will steal your loot from under your nose. If you want to share – exchange, bargain, negotiate. Social mechanics work honestly and pleasantly here. And yes – do not abuse potions. You want to feel like a hero, not a fountain. By the way, back in 2013, the developers added convenient tools for creating mods. Since then, the community has created a ton of add-ons – from simple interface and inventory modifications to giant fan projects with new classes, quests and entire worlds. And the musical design is a separate reason for respect. The soundtrack was written by Matt Owlman, the same one who composed music for Diablo, Diablo 2 and World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade. Some of the melodies sound so atmospheric and familiar that for a moment it seems that the very same disturbing theme from Tristram is about to play.
