However, if you are a veteran of the original game, and have spent hundreds of hours in it, Breakdown is unlikely to really surprise you. The locations are the same, the routes are familiar, and even your hands remember where to find supplies or how to quickly build a defense. Increased difficulty will certainly add problems, but the feeling of novelty will be minimal.

And yes, Breakdown has no ending. There is no triumphant ending, cut-scene or mission with the last chance for salvation. The game ends when you lose. Or when you surrender. It’s simple. In addition, the starting point is random each time — and this sometimes leads to desperate situations. Sometimes you will start right in a zombie lair, where there is no chance at all. But everything is not so hopeless: the map from the very beginning shows groups of survivors that you can join so as not to be alone in this hell.

Lifeline, the second DLC, radically changes the approach to survival. Everything is different here – from the location to the gameplay concept. You are no longer an ordinary civilian trying to save yourself in chaos. Now you are part of a military squad tasked with saving key people, holding back the hordes and, if possible, not dying.

Instead of the usual farms, forests and suburbs – a new map based on a small city with a military base. However, the illusion of urban density quickly disappears: there are large distances between the buildings, and you still spend most of the time in open areas, only to the sounds of machine gun fire and radio exchange with command. The gameplay has become more straightforward and dynamic. No subtle flanking maneuvers – everything is decided by force. Orders, sorties, evacuations, mass attacks of the dead. The game has become more like an action movie. Airstrikes, equipment deliveries, helicopter deliveries of supplies are available to you. The main thing is not to abuse them.

The emphasis on defensive mechanics has noticeably increased. A new feature is sieges, where hordes of zombies periodically attack your base. But even with a militarized approach, there is not enough stock for everything. Sometimes you have to personally go to abandoned houses in search of ammunition or medicine. Fortunately, this does not happen very often – after all, you can always call a helicopter with reinforcements.

And yet, despite all the action and tension, Lifeline lacks soul. The plot is painfully banal: saving scientists, searching for a vaccine, evacuating the chosen ones. We’ve seen all this before – in movies, in other games, even in the original. And the most annoying thing is that the story ends rather abruptly. Just when you start to get involved – and the final credits roll. Bottom line: both add-ons are great at revealing new facets of State of Decay. One focuses on pure survival, the other on tactical combat and military strategy. They’re not perfect, but if you’re looking for a reason to return to this universe, Year One Survival Edition gives you two at once. And believe me, neither of them will let you relax.
