At first glance, it seems that all this has already been in the previous part? Yes, similar motives are obvious. But if you delve deeper, it becomes clear: there is no simple self-repetition here. In Rebellion, not only did they take a time-tested formula, but they also shamelessly took inspiration from the successes of their colleagues in the genre. The result is a lively and interesting project that I really want to talk about in more detail!

I want to start with a short story about myself. I got acquainted with the Sniper Elite series with the fourth part, and then, having become interested, decided to play all the previous games, but in reverse order. This way I was able to clearly see how Rebellion developed its concept. If I describe this path briefly, it turned out to be very interesting. The first part of Sniper Elite, even after all these years, remains original and unique. In 2005, the game offered an exciting experience for its time: wide locations by the standards of those years, intense sabotage missions, where you had to act under cover in the form of Nazis, and quite hardcore realistic sniper shooting. At that time, the project resembled Metal Gear Solid, but the emphasis was on long distances.

It was almost impossible to go straight ahead – the enemies quickly surrounded, smoked out of their positions and took by attrition. And if they encountered armored vehicles, the conversation was short. Therefore, it was necessary to use distractions, binoculars and a compass wisely to get to an advantageous position and eliminate the officer with one precise shot. That same “killcam” looked primitive back then, but it gave a completely new level of shooting sensations. However, despite all the atmosphere, the project suffered from technical limitations, and it was clear that Rebellion needed to change something in order to move forward.

Seven years later, Sniper Elite V2 was released – and its name immediately made it clear: this is a rethinking. The experiment was successful. It was from this part that many elements of the series became almost unchanged. In addition to a noticeable graphic update, the game received a cheerful soundtrack, more variability of tasks and new gadgets like mines and traps for organizing ambushes. Additional modes appeared: side missions, co-op and “Survival”, which allowed you to stay in the game for a long time. But at the same time, the structure of the levels changed. Locations became narrower and more linear, which is why clashes increasingly turned into a simple shooting gallery. And although this gave more chances for mistakes, sometimes the events descended into farce, and the AI ​​looked frankly weak. Sometimes you could catch battles between soldiers of both sides of the Eastern Front, which added atmosphere, but it was risky to interfere with them. For stealth, the developers added bypass routes, but in most cases they were too predictable.

As a result, V2 suffered from “scripting”: often the only way to complete a mission stealthily was to move strictly along prepared routes. And as soon as you made a mistake, there was no choice but to engage in an open firefight. Due to the aggressive AI, these firefights quickly became boring. They tried to fix these shortcomings in Sniper Elite 3. The third part took a step forward, offering more spacious levels and moving the events to North Africa during World War II. For the first time in the series, a gear wheel and weapon customization appeared. The main character received more opportunities, and players were offered to use the environment: for example, to muffle the sound of shots with the help of damaged generators. The return to open spaces made classic sniper gameplay popular again. And it was here that one of the calling cards of the series appeared – the mission to eliminate Hitler himself. Additional modes again ensured the longevity of the game, including the “Two” mode, where one player acted as a spotter in the rear, and the other as a sniper at a distance.

However, the chosen setting did not allow the developers to go all out in terms of level design. Sand dunes, endless sand dunes, monotonous architecture — all of this existed in an almost unchanging white and yellow palette. Of course, there were rare oases and night missions, but overall, the variety quickly dried up. Two maps for the “Survival” mode seemed almost a copy of each other. Sniper Elite 4 took on this problem in earnest — and it succeeded. The game turned into a real sniper sandbox. Karl received a whole arsenal of new gadgets and variations of familiar tools. For example, bandages appeared that do not restore health, but slow down the pulse — convenient for accurate shooting. Subsonic cartridges were introduced for weapons: you choose them — Karl himself screws on the silencer, and there was no longer a need to depend on noisy generators or limited positions to conduct an unnoticed hunt from afar. And there really was plenty to roam around: the levels became truly huge and diverse. To prevent the player from feeling lost, the maps were filled with a bunch of secondary quests, collectibles like soldiers’ letters, and several routes to each important goal.

The developers didn’t stop there and made a number of other successful changes:

• When detecting enemies with binoculars, each fighter was given a short biography, which greatly enhanced the atmosphere.
• In co-op, found collectibles were credited to both players, and the host was given the ability to manually save progress – a feature that is now hard to imagine a comfortable game without.
• User settings for multiplayer matches became incredibly flexible – you could customize almost everything.
• Destroying equipment required not only a bunch of explosives, but also accurate shooting: now the crew could be knocked out through vulnerable spots.
• Passive skills (perks) were unlocked for increasing the level, available for all game modes.

Unfortunately, there were some strange decisions. For some unknown reason, Rebellion practically forgot about weapon customization. It remained at the level of primitive grinding from F2P games: kill N enemies in the head – get a damage increase and a new skin. Instead, all attention went to a variety of character skins, which, admittedly, were much more interesting to collect.

How Stealth and Peaceful Play Work in the New Sniper Elite 5

Usually in such cases it makes sense to start with a story about the game’s plot to smoothly immerse you in the atmosphere of what’s happening. But in order not to get confused in the details, let’s immediately move on to the most interesting part – the gameplay. The first thing that catches your eye is that Carl has a new arsenal of traps, as if he became Sam Fisher’s cousin. This is due to the emergence of a new layer of gameplay – a non-lethal approach. Unlike the same Splinter Cell: Blacklist, here you don’t even need to manually switch between modes. In practice, the “peaceful” style of passing gives its own bonus – for each enemy incapacitated without killing, you are awarded more experience after completing the mission. Eliminating enemies non-lethally is quieter and safer than attacking in close combat. However, there is a nuance: the capture animations are chosen randomly, and this can fail at a crucial moment. For example, a silent strangulation may work, or a blow with a knife handle, which outsiders can easily hear. For those who decide to go the stealth route, Rebellion has some new toys in store. For example, a bait in the form of a helmet on a stick, which attracts the attention of enemies and marks them at the same time, as well as a contact high-explosive mine, which knocks out opponents when triggered.

The binoculars have also been upgraded: now they work like in the second part of the series. On standard difficulty, enemies are displayed on the minimap not as dots, but as blurred zones that disappear if you mark all the soldiers inside them with binoculars. Serious changes have also affected the “special items” – they are now called “easy”. In addition to keys and codes for safes, they have added penetrating charges (no longer infinite) and new faithful assistants – a crowbar and bolt cutter. They are indispensable for sabotage and allow you to quickly open boxes and locked doors if you have no time to mess with locks. Fortunately, the developers thoughtfully place the necessary tools close to places where they can be useful. And finally, a pleasant surprise – the “instinct” mechanic, reminiscent of the HITMAN series. With its help, you can search for objects and enemies through walls in a small radius and even slow down time. But in order not to make the game too easy, the developers introduced restrictions: when activating the instinct, your pulse quickens, and your speed of movement decreases.

The final gift for your inventory is three new types of ammunition, each of which opens up new tactical possibilities.

• Armor-piercing rounds are heavy, powerful, and extremely effective against vehicles and fortified targets. They easily penetrate enemy helmets and are even capable of destroying stone shelters. They are much easier to fight against enemies entrenched in houses or armored vehicles.
• Soft-tip rounds – these shells inflict significantly more damage to enemy manpower. They cause bleeding, causing the enemy to gradually lose health even after a single hit. The perfect choice for those who prefer the “hit and forget” tactic.
• Non-lethal rounds – made of wax, they are designed to stun. A headshot will incapacitate the enemy, but leave him alive. A great option for missions that require stealth or capturing targets alive.

The added first-person aiming mode for secondary weapons deserves a special mention. It feels quite familiar to those who played MGSV or PUBG: aiming has become more convenient and natural. However, it is worth considering that in active shootouts against live players, the effectiveness of this mode still leaves much to be desired – it is more useful in PvE than in PvP.

The updated leveling system makes character development more understandable and exciting. For each level you gain, you earn a skill point that can be invested in one of three areas:

• Combat — everything related to efficiency in battles: shooting, reload speed, stealth.
• Equipment — improving the use of equipment: mines, traps, gadgets.
• Body — the hero’s physical endurance, defense and ability to withstand more damage.

Having reached level 40, you can fully unlock all available skills. Thus, the system motivates you to fully explore the game, without the feeling of cruel restrictions on development.

The developers focused on exploring the world. Locations are not just big anymore — they are filled with routes, secrets, and additional tasks. Now you can use ziplines to move quickly — ropes for sliding between map levels, and to overcome high walls, vines have been placed that you can climb. The mission structure has changed: at the beginning, you only get the main task, and to open side missions, you will have to explore the map — look for documents, intercept radio communications, or carefully examine suspicious places.

Types of additional tasks: Destruction of fortifications — a return to the classics of the series: find anti-aircraft guns, cannons, or other fortifications to destroy them. Killing key targets — a mini-Hitman right in Sniper Elite. In addition to the basic task of eliminating the target, you can find special ways of killing, for which you will receive unique rewards — new weapons or modules. Each additional task makes the passage not only more interesting, but also rewards the player’s curiosity, which is nice.

The mechanics of destroying fortifications are simple: find documents confirming their existence, or stumble upon a fortification during exploration. Even if you are not specifically looking for anything, sooner or later the task will be activated automatically through the hero’s comment. As for eliminating important targets, the developers tried to add some zest here. Sometimes completing a task requires only basic shooting and stealth skills, and sometimes – ingenuity: for example, to find poison, pick a lock or cause an accident. These elements bring a pleasant variety to the game, requiring a little more involvement than just good shooting.

The weapon modification system is reminiscent of the best examples of the genre – be it Call of Duty or Battlefield. Weapons can be customized by changing:

• sights,
• barrels,
• stocks,
• magazines,
• handles.

Each element affects the characteristics: accuracy, recoil, damage, rate of fire and even mobility. The balance is carefully observed: any improvement in one aspect almost always entails a deterioration in another.

New modules are opened in two ways:

• For a certain number of kills (and sometimes it is important where exactly to hit – in the head, in the torso, etc.).
• Through finding workbenches on the map, which is especially convenient, because now for the first time you can change the equipment right during the mission, and not only at the beginning.

The work with layouts is also pleasing: now the player has not just 4 presets for different builds, but separate sets for each game mode. This saves a lot of time: before each mission, you don’t need to re-configure everything manually — just select a ready-made combination. And if you often switch between stealth, assault, and classic sniping, having different builds for each case is a real find.

And yet, despite the abundance of innovations, the old problems of the series still make themselves felt. Experienced players will immediately feel that the ideal mechanics for managing such a volume of content is not an easy task. Although the map has become more interesting, it still looks empty in places. Some mechanics do not work as smoothly as we would like, and the enemy AI can still be unpredictably strange. So if you were expecting a flawless gameplay without rough edges, be prepared: the big ambitions of the development team do not always harmoniously combine with the technical implementation.

Sniper Elite 5: Co-op Play, Tank Battles, and the Controversial Invasion Mode Explained

As mentioned many times, the game still has a co-op mode. And this is not just a formality: you can save and load at any time, and also invite a friend directly into your single-player playthrough to overcome a particularly difficult section together. But let’s talk about the enemies. Rebellion studio made a couple of important changes so that the hackneyed fight with Nazi infantry finally sparkled with new colors. They reworked the elite enemies and made the tanks real armored monsters. In case anyone forgot, in the fourth part the developers made hand-to-hand combat almost cheating: in close combat you could lay down soldiers in batches, except that tanks could not be dismantled with your hands. Now everything is different: as soon as you get into the field of view of a ranger or an officer – you can quickly be disarmed and shot if you do not react in time.

The situation with tanks has also changed. If earlier it was possible to simply remove the driver and gunner, and then blow up the empty armored vehicle without any fuss, now it is not so simple. The events unfold in 1944, which means that on the streets of France every second tank is a “Royal Tiger”. To cope with such a colossus, you will have to show ingenuity: penetrate the armor in the area of ​​the exhaust pipes, then shoot special armor-piercing rounds into the open engine section. You can, of course, try to plant three TNT blocks and hope for the best, but this is the path of real adventurers.

One of the features that Rebellion was especially proud of was the “Invasion” mode. Its idea migrated almost unchanged from Watch_Dogs: you find yourself on the side of the villains and must track down and eliminate the main character. However, the British interpretation turned out to be, let’s say, ambiguous. How does it work? After starting the mode, you are thrown onto a random map with a random player (sometimes – with two, if they have co-op enabled), and your task is to kill the target by any means necessary. Knowledge of the maps here is not just desirable – it is vital. You decide for yourself whether to act honestly and organize a full-fledged hunt, or, for example, mine the only exit and just wait for the victim.

The entire mechanics of “Invasion” are based on several rules:

• The German sniper is required to mark allies through binoculars – they, in turn, can tell him where the main character is hanging out.
• The sniper initially knows neither the player’s missions nor his starting position.
• The only active skill of the sniper is to start the search mode for soldiers in the selected zone.
• The main character can calculate the sniper’s position using special phones.

If the hero calls too often from the same point or sits in one place for a long time, the game itself will give his coordinates to the enemy – so that he does not camp. And if you ignore the warnings, the “lazy” player will be eliminated automatically. Despite the interesting idea, the reviews of “Invasion” were contradictory. On the one hand, Rebellion is trying to gently push players to turn on the mode, increasing the reward for completing tasks by 25%. On the other hand, the “Search” system does not allow you to just go and join a friend’s match: only random selection.

At first glance, the decision is logical: supposedly, so that players do not farm rewards in the company of friends and then do not complain about the lack of content. But here comes the strange thing: why then are multiplayer trials allowed to be completed in closed lobbies? There, in a couple of hours, you can knock out excellent modules for yourself and a friend without much effort. In the end, Rebellion took the idea from Ubisoft, but adapted it through double standards, leaving behind many questions.

Sniper Elite 5 Multiplayer: Problems, Features and Prospects

At the moment, playing Sniper Elite 4 multiplayer is a dubious pleasure. The majority of players have long since upgraded everything possible, so online matches most often turn into a dull shootout of static snipers. It would seem that this is normal for a sniper game, but when you stupidly stare at one point for 20 minutes, and the enemies do not even try to stick their heads out, this is not the drive you expect from multiplayer, especially when the genre promises “action”. The developers from Rebellion tried to breathe life into online battles by adding customization. Now weapons need to be opened again, and upgrading works differently. This means that your favorite setup will never be perfect – and opponents will be able to find weak spots in it.

Another attempt to stir up players is supply boxes that appear on the map every 3-4 minutes. Inside you can find both special cartridges and a rocket launcher for calling in an airstrike. Capturing the crate means getting bonus experience and, more importantly, a reason to take a risk and come out of hiding. As for the modes, everything basically revolves around Deathmatch, but with different variations:

• Team Deathmatch: 8 vs. 8. A very slow mode – most prefer to sit and keep a low profile.
• Every man for himself: 16 people on one map. In places it reminds me of Call of Duty, but with the amendment that you can literally die from an invisible shot from half a map away.
• Squad vs. Squad: the most lively and interesting option. Four teams of four people occupy key positions and arrange real shootouts.
• No partition: two camps at opposite ends of the map, between them there is a wall that cannot be passed. Only long-range sniper duels.

There is, however, one problem: there are catastrophically few maps in the game. Only four standard ones and two for the “No partition” mode (and only one of them is new). If they do not add something fresh with future updates, online battles will quickly become boring.

Sniper Elite 5 System Requirements

The problems here are not the usual “crashes to desktop”. No, everything is much more interesting. Every time you manage to pull off some complex operation, you can see how the game engine literally suffocates – as if steam is coming out of its ears. During an alarm, the Nazis begin to behave strangely: they rush back and forth, as if they do not know what to do. And if you blow up something on the edge of their detection zone, the search indicator starts blinking helplessly and remains in this state until you reboot. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Some bugs are not so easy to fix.

It’s better to keep quiet about the “target from Hitman” here: as soon as you make a careless move or make some noise, the entire scripted scenario goes to hell. After one such incident, my entire mission went downhill – I will definitely tell you about this separately. If we talk about the pros, then on a technical level, the five pleases, perhaps, only with optimization and graphics settings. We were especially pleased with the presence of FidelityFX™ Super Resolution – essentially a people’s version of NVIDIA DLSS – thanks to which we were able to squeeze out a stable frame rate and play comfortably.
