The modding community was once a true engine of progress in the gaming industry. They worked side by side with developers, inspired players, and created entire universes on top of established games. Today, their influence has noticeably diminished—large studios rely less on fan-made creations. But from time to time, modders still make a name for themselves. And they do so in a way that gets everyone talking. One of the most striking examples is the large-scale project Enderal: Forgotten Stories.

2011 was a true milestone in the gaming industry. Long-awaited sequels to iconic series appeared on store shelves and digital platforms, along with entirely new projects that brought fresh ideas and unique gaming experiences. Some games met fans’ expectations, others disappointed, but the date November 11, 2011, will forever be etched in gaming history. On this day, the legendary fifth installment of The Elder Scrolls, Skyrim, was released.
Skyrim instantly became a phenomenon. Its world captivated millions of players, and its rich modding capabilities inspired an entire community of enthusiasts. For over a decade, fans have created hundreds, if not thousands, of modifications: from enhanced graphics and reworked animations to new weapons, quests, and even global storylines. Thanks to mods, Skyrim has found a second, third, and even tenth life, revealing a new side each time.

One of the most ambitious mods, Enderal: The Shards of Order, released in 2016, deserves special attention. It wasn’t just a collection of changes, but a full-fledged game built on the Skyrim engine, with a unique world, story, and characters. Three years later, the project received a reworked and significantly expanded version called Enderal: Forgotten Stories. This version of the mod was a true gift to fans and proved that modders are capable of creating projects on par with major studios.
Today, we’ll take a closer look at what makes Enderal: Forgotten Stories special and why it deserves the attention of even those who have spent hundreds of hours in Skyrim.

Enderal vs. Skyrim: Key Differences, Mechanics, and Gameplay Features
The first thing to understand is that Enderal is not a Skyrim modification, but a full-fledged game that simply uses the engine and technical foundation of the legendary TES V. The story, characters, and world are completely original and bear no direct relation to the history of Skyrim. However, the familiar silver interface, skill names, and some assets have migrated to Enderal, creating a subtle déjà vu effect. But that’s where the similarities end.
The progression system: books instead of grind
The difference is felt literally from the first hours of the game. Enderal has a familiar experience lane and an updated level system. Experience is gained for familiar actions: defeating enemies, completing quests, creating potions, picking locks, or finding rare artifacts. When the scale fills up, the hero gets a new level and can increase one of the three basic properties: health, mana or stamina.

But the most interesting part starts further — along with the level, the player gets points for memory, crafting and skills. Here, the authors completely abandoned the TES system, where skills swung due to the endless blocking of crab strikes. At Enderal, growth is based on skill books. Points are needed, but the skills themselves increase only after reading the necessary books. Moreover, the number of available books depends on the level, and it is the player who decides what to spend them on.
The skill titles remained familiar: Apprentice, Adept, Expert, and Master. For example, at the 44th skill level, the student’s book is already useless – at least an adept’s book is needed. If you try to cheat, the game will honestly warn you that you are wasting resources.
Crafting and gold: Finally make sense
Alchemy, hacking, blacksmithing, enchantment, rhetoric and pickpocketing have not gone away. But there are no separate skill trees for them here — they are built into a common class system. Blacksmithing has been especially transformed: now it is enough to have a blueprint, materials and the right skill level, and points for opening recipes are no longer needed.
It is also interesting how the value of gold has changed. At TES, coins quickly lost value after buying a house and a couple of pieces of jewelry. At Enderal, high-level books are expensive, and the lion’s share of savings is spent on them. So each coin gains weight and real value.
New mechanics: phasmalism and arcane fever
Enderal went beyond cosmetic changes. Phasmalism, a soul summoning system, has been added to the game. They can be found, enclosed in talismans and then called for help in battle. Moreover, spirits can be equipped with armor and customize their fighting style.

The second innovation is the arcana fever. Each use of potions or spells increases her level: first, the bonuses to her stats decrease, then mana stops recovering, and death occurs at 100%. Fever can only be reduced with a rare potion or alchemy (if you’re lucky enough to get a recipe). This makes you more cautious about healing and magic.
Treatment and food: caution instead of recklessness
Unlike Skyrim, health is not automatically restored here. Potions work gradually and, in addition, increase fever. Therefore, food and cooking come to the fore. What used to look like a role-playing element for the atmosphere has now become a full-fledged alternative to treatment. However, you won’t be able to have a snack during the fight — the food only works outside of the fight.
This approach makes the game measured and requires accuracy. Enderal is not about rushing into a crowd with a dozen potions in his pocket — he appreciates strategy, planning and cold calculation.
Travel and restrictions
Another difference is the lack of fast movement on the map. Instead of the usual click, you will have to use:

-
miradami (the local equivalent of silt striders from Morrowind) – and pay for the services of a charioteer;
-
teleportation scrolls, which are sold from merchants;
-
the “Mark” spell, which allows you to return to a pre—selected location.
Even moving around the world becomes part of the strategy: you need to monitor resources, manage cargo competently, and take care of your horse.
The combat system and familiar elements
At the same time, Enderal does not deprive players of the usual joys of TES. Fighting with two weapons, combining spells, and even the equivalent of “dragon screams” remained in the game, albeit under different names. These details create a balance between novelty and familiarity, and also emphasize the developers’ respect for the original.
As a result, Enderal is not just a fan project, but a full—fledged RPG with its own character. She takes the proven foundation of Skyrim and builds new, deeper mechanics on top of it, where every coin, every potion, and every decision is valued.
The World of Enderal: Forgotten Stories
The world of Enderal is strikingly different from the familiar Skyrim. Everything here is built according to its own laws: unique mythology, original characters, inimitable villains, literary traditions and guilds. This is an independent universe that only formally resembles TES, but actually lives by its own rules.
If in Skyrim, when mentioning the “open world”, the first word that comes to mind is “space”, then in Enderal everything is different. Skyrim greets the player with endless plains, cliffs and mountain trails, where you can easily turn off the road and take a shortcut through a ravine or mountain. In Enderal, there are almost no such features. The continent here resembles a network of paths and roads, and they become the basis of the study. The player is rarely allowed to get out of the way, and any attempts to “cut a corner” often lead to invisible walls or pointless waste of time.
There are no hidden caves hidden somewhere behind windbreaks, where you could get into Skyrim for the sake of a sense of discovery. Everything works differently in Enderal: each object is accessible, right by the trails, and always has a specific approach. This makes the structure of the world more orderly, but not at all less fascinating.

At the same time, the quality of the study is not inferior to Skyrim. Where Oblivion was once criticized for similar dungeons, Skyrim took a step forward, and Enderal confidently continued this tradition. The tombs, ruins and ancient sanctuaries here are unique, and each new place is remembered for its atmosphere.
Yes, the territory of Enderal is much smaller in scale than Skyrim. But this “reduction” only served him well. The authors managed to place snow-capped peaks, dense forests, and even desert expanses resembling Arrakis or Middle-Earth on a compact island. The world feels more concentrated, saturated with details and events.
And most importantly, Enderal retains a sense of mystery. Exploring it, you constantly feel that each location holds something of its own and is sure to offer the player a new experience. And if in Skyrim the endless journey ahead beckoned, then in Enderal one is drawn to every turn of the path — after all, there is always a story behind it.
Plot and quests
When you immerse yourself in the world of Enderal, you immediately feel its differences from the usual fantasy universes. This place seems mature, gloomy and ruthless. The authors are not afraid to show the dark sides of society, they do not shy away from cruelty and often give the player choices in which there is no right answer. The decision is always yours — and that’s what makes you really feel the consequences. Sometimes developers even intentionally take control away from the player in order to emphasize the importance of certain events and make them feel their weight.
The task system here is divided into main and secondary tasks. But even the minor stories are worked out in such detail that they often overshadow quests from Skyrim. They are closer in spirit to The Witcher 3, where every step can surprise with an unexpected twist. Of course, there are standard tasks like finding artifacts or eliminating enemies, but most of the side quests turn into full-fledged dramatic stories that you want to go through not for the sake of rewards, but for the sake of the experience.
As for the main storyline, it is beyond any doubt superior to many modern RPGs. By comparison, Enderal doesn’t just beat Skyrim, but literally knocks it out of memory, leaving even projects like Fallout 4 or Horizon: Forbidden West far behind. In terms of scale and emotional depth, the game resembles the best moments of Mass Effect, but at the same time retains its own face and unique atmosphere.

The characters here are spelled out especially carefully. There aren’t many of them, but each one feels alive.: The characters have a past, character, weaknesses and fears. Gradually, learning their stories, you begin to feel sympathy and empathy, like real people. This emotional connection makes the plot even more powerful and personal.
The developers skillfully work with the rhythm of the narrative. At the very beginning, the player is faced with riddles that do not give direct answers for a long time. But step by step, the tension increases, events become more serious, and the general mood changes: a slight tinge of adventure gives way to a sense of impending disaster.
And finally, the music. The Enderal soundtrack not only accompanies the journey, but creates the mood of each scene. It turns on at the right moments, amplifies emotional shocks and turns important episodes into the very scenes that remain in the memory for a long time. Thanks to the music, the game world comes to life, and some moments give you goosebumps.
Enderal: Forgotten Stories – a game that managed to surpass Skyrim
When I went through Enderal and sat down to write this material, one curious thing struck me. No matter what I analyzed—the plot, the quests, the mechanics, or the atmosphere—I came to a conclusion every time.: this is not at all what happened in Skyrim. The pumping system is more like Gothic 3, the music is closer to Oblivion, and the world with its corridor bundles and branches in some places smacks of the spirit of The Witcher 2 or even the Souls series of games. Only the combat system, the names of the objects and some elements of the environment remind us that we are still looking at a modification of Skyrim.
The authors of the project deliberately abandoned the creation of a huge “sandbox” world, relying on what the original lacked: a strong script, deep characters and stories that really catch on. If there was almost nothing to look for in Skyrim for fans of story—oriented RPGs, then Enderal corrected this oversight – and did it surprisingly organically, without forgetting about the exploration of the open world, albeit presented in its own format.

In addition, the developers managed to give many elements of the game a meaning that looked superficial in Skyrim. Due to this, Enderal is perceived as a more complete and balanced game.
Of course, there were some rough edges. Among the most notable problems are:
-
flickering shadows from the grass;
-
unpolished rocks found in the mountains;
-
Invisible walls blocking the way;
-
scripts that sometimes don’t work when passing fast;
-
engine bugs that turn dramatic scenes into comic ones;
-
sudden crashes of the game, after which the launch is possible only after restarting the PC.
But all this is the usual price to pay for the world of PC gaming, familiar to every player.
And yet the main question remains: did the developers manage to create a full-fledged replacement for Skyrim? Can Enderal be called the “new Skyrim”? The honest answer is no. The scale of development and the concept itself are completely different here. This game will not become a cultural phenomenon, will not generate memes and will not sell millions of copies. She is unlikely to be quoted by modern gaming journalists.
But for me personally, everything turned out differently. Enderal turned out to be closer, more interesting and more honest than Skyrim. Where Bethesda couldn’t keep the balance between epicness and content, SureAI Studio managed to give the player the feeling of a real adventure that you want to go through to the end.
