The name “Renaissance” sounds a bit out of place in the case of the new Death Track. Those who remember the original will immediately catch the reference – but the current generation is unlikely to have encountered the same Hellcat or remember heroes like Motormaniac and Wrecker. The classic Death Track will soon be 20 years old, and for many it remains just a line in the annals of the genre. But no matter how you look at it, it is still the best attempt to connect the past with the present – even with an inexplicable gap in the name.

The main thing you can love about combat racing is the crazy drive and endless flow of adrenaline. Yes, the plot here is almost imperceptible, the cutscenes are so-so, but all this disappears as soon as you hear the roar of the engine and find yourself on the track. It’s a pity that the career mode flies by too quickly – ten stages of the championship fly by one after another, before you have time to look back. And upgrading a car is a simple matter: take a place in the top three, get money, spend it and again – into battle.

On the one hand, it invigorates: all the time on the move, no time to get bored. On the other hand, you just want the game to be a little meaner, a little crazier. So that instead of glamorous body kits in the spirit of NFS – harsh spikes, brutal bumpers, chainsaws on the hood and a whole arsenal of guns on the roof. Alas, the local store has a more modest selection. You have a standard set at your disposal: machine guns, lasers, plasma throwers, missiles, mines and spikes. But even this is enough to arrange a real apocalypse on the track already on the second lap.

And it is also difficult to resist the temptation to test each car. You want to get behind the wheel of everything – from a squat “Gangsta” in the retro spirit to a threateningly massive “Kurd 7000” or an aggressive “Gator”. The cars here are pleasing to the eye: stylish design, bright paint (except for the dull starting version), control in the air – all this makes them memorable. But, alas, there are some downsides here: the car descriptions are devoid of useful information, the cars simply explode when they lose armor, and upgrades must be purchased anew for each model without exception.

And yet, even without a developed plot, the game offers variety. In the “Championship” mode, you race along tracks distributed by region. “Drag” is a short but technical race with a manual transmission. In “Tasks” you will find strange formulations like: “Don’t lose a single percent of armor on the 3rd lap” or “Don’t destroy Jeremy in the first lap at all.” In addition, Death Track has interesting modes: “Modern” – dynamic, with a respawn after destruction, “Classic” – a harsh selection, where the loser is eliminated, and “Rally” – for those who prefer to race without shooting.

You won’t be bored. But for all this to really play out, you should immediately turn the difficulty level to the maximum – then the artificial intelligence will please, and the feeling of a real challenge will appear.

Death Track: Resurrection Gameplay

Frankly speaking, there are plenty of complaints about the game. Especially if you run it “out of the box”, without patches. The camera can fall under the asphalt, the sight can disappear at the most inopportune moment, and respawning can be like a pure lottery. Gamepad support? It simply doesn’t exist. But here’s what’s surprising: all this does not spoil the overall impression at all. Because the game has one undeniable trump card – the tracks. They are what make “Rebirth” truly memorable. Like its sister game “Mechanoids: Survival Racing”, the strongest side here is the atmosphere and design of the locations.

Each race is like a mini-journey through the ruins of once majestic, but now abandoned megalopolises. San Diego, covered in greenery and silence, where the asphalt cracks under the wheels; Bangkok, flooded by rain and neon, as if descended from the pages of a cyberpunk novel; dark, mysterious Prague with its Gothic architecture; and, of course, winter, harsh Moscow, bound by ice and time. These cities are not just a backdrop for racing – they feel alive, with their own history, pain and oblivion. The visual part is made with such love that sometimes you catch yourself thinking: you don’t want to rush at full speed, but just look at the surroundings.

But the setting is only half the story. From a game design point of view, the tracks are made wisely. These are not just ring routes, but arenas filled with events and interactive elements. Here is just part of what makes each race rich and varied:

• ramps and hills that allow spectacular jumps and changes in trajectory;
• branched routes with the ability to choose more advantageous paths;
• force field generators that can be destroyed to open shortcuts;
• interactive buildings, the explosion of which brings various bonuses;
• a well-thought-out system of balance between risk and reward at each section of the track.

All this is presented not as a random set of elements, but as a well-thought-out game mechanics that require attention and quick reactions. The only thing that is sometimes missing is a little more density of events: in too wide areas, opponents can easily pass each other. In more cramped conditions, the action would be even more intense. Although, perhaps, then the screen would be overloaded with flashes, fire, lasers and explosions. Now the visual effects are powerful, but not flashy – thanks to the good work of The Engine, familiar to players from projects like “Dungeon Cleaners” and “Code of War”. It copes with the load with flying colors.

In the end, Death Track: Rebirth is a powerful drive, spectacular tracks, a juicy soundtrack and a really cool atmosphere. If the developers had added multiplayer, the game could easily take its place in the pantheon of the best arcade racers. Alas, this did not happen, and “Rebirth” remained in the shadows – albeit a very bright one.
