Against the Storm is the first work of Eremite Games studio, and the developers here ventured into an unusual experiment: they combined a classic urban planning simulator with roguelike mechanics. As a result, each new game turns into an independent adventure, where the usual strategy stops working, and the player has to rebuild the tactics of settlement development, balancing between resources, weather conditions and the mood of the inhabitants. Below is a detailed review in which we analyze the gameplay features, atmosphere and key elements of this unusual game.

At first glance, Against the Storm may seem like another indie strategy – there really are enough of them on the market. Visually, the game is slightly reminiscent of classics like Warcraft 3, and in terms of systems, more relaxed Settlers. But it’s enough to look at the estimates to understand that we have something much more ambitious in front of us. On Metacritic, the project holds an impressive 92 out of 100 points, and Steam still has a rare “Awesome” mark based on 18,630 reviews, of which 95% are positive. For an independent project, the result is almost incredible.
Getting to the point, it becomes clear that a resounding success is not accidental. The developers have found a bold solution — to combine an urban planning strategy with a full-fledged roguelike walkthrough. It’s not just a hybrid of genres like FTL, Into the Breach, or Loop Hero, which also offer procedural challenges. Here we have the first truly successful “urban bagel”, where each race forces us to change the development plan, rethink the economy, adjust to resources and adapt to the vagaries of the universe. This mechanic was the “critical blow” that brought the game to the top and created a stable cult status around it.

Plot
The world of Against the Storm is immersed in an endless element. Here, rain is not just a weather effect, but a constant, almost living participant in events. At times, this gloomy atmosphere thickens to the state of a Rotten Storm: a terrifying natural phenomenon carrying poisonous gases that are harmful to any form of life. No one knows exactly what caused the disaster, but according to legend, it is payback for the pride of ancient civilizations — those who tried to subjugate natural forces. Despite the gloomy setting, such a presentation greatly enhances the emotional intensity and immersion in ENT.
Against the backdrop of a ruined world, only one place has retained a chance of survival — a smoldering city, sheltering on top of a volcano. It is a kind of survivors’ capital, an expedition control center and a key point of strategic development. It is ruled by the Scorched Queen, who has a magical connection with the element of fire and is able to restrain the fury of the storm. Its power, mythology and the mystical atmosphere associated with it create a solid narrative foundation, thanks to which the game feels not just a set of mechanics, but a whole living world.

Gameplay
The gameplay of Against the Storm is built around an unusual formula: This is not just a strategy about settlement development, but a mix of survival, indirect management, and elements of a global map that gradually unfolds as you progress. It is based on a cycle of passing locations — each of them becomes a step towards conquering a world engulfed by endless storms.
The session is based on the principle of regular expansion. Each time, the player moves further away from the Smoldering City, establishing temporary outposts. But in order for these settlements to become part of the kingdom, they need to prove their own resilience: complete a set of tasks that are being formed anew in each location. This approach makes each playthrough unique, and the strategy flexible and dynamic.
The development of new settlements is closely related to the player’s progress. Successful expeditions are rewarded with special resources used for construction, improvements, and the discovery of new opportunities. In parallel, you can level up in the main city by getting powerful passive bonuses, new types of buildings, and additional tools for future races. As you level up, the system starts working as “skill rewards” — small but pleasant bonuses turn into tangible help in the following sessions.
Before starting each expedition, the game generates a set of terrain modifiers — positive and negative. These conditions affect the economy, climate, and even the mood of residents, which makes resource management much more profound. This is a classic element of strategic gameplay, but here it reveals itself especially expressively.
Construction and survival
Disembarkation in a new location always starts the same way: you have a Hearth — the main building, the heart of the settlement, on the condition of which the lives of all residents depend. The first workers and a small warehouse are located nearby. All this is surrounded by a huge forest filled with resources, hidden glades and random events.

The initial set of resources never allows you to win a game directly — exploring the map becomes a mandatory part of survival. At the same time, residents need shelter, food and comfort. The player must monitor their mood: if the situation becomes unbearable, workers will start dying or running away, which can destroy the economy in a matter of minutes.
Exploring the world
Glades usually hide supplies, mini-quests, or rare destroyed structures that can be restored. You need to break through to them with the help of sawmills, cutting down trees and opening up new territories. This creates a rhythm of exploration: to find, to purify, to benefit.
A nice feature of the game is the system of fast movement of buildings. Instead of lengthy reconstructions, buildings can be moved quickly, which increases the pace and makes every action conscious. Thanks to this, even a small settlement becomes functional, clean and optimized.
The base buildings are divided into mining and production buildings. Their variety is not as huge as in classic city simulators, but it is more than enough to build interesting production chains. Moreover, there are many blocked objects hidden in the Smoldering City’s progress tree, which can be unlocked as you progress.
Each mining building operates within a limited radius, which requires proper placement. In addition, different settler races have their own skills: some are faster at harvesting resources, others are more efficient at crafting or cooking. This adds depth to the distribution of workers.
The forest also harbors threats: some clearings are marked as dangerous. There may be buildings with negative effects, such as a decrease in mood, loss of supplies, or illness of residents. Coping with threats requires investing resources and assigning employees, as is the case with conventional production buildings. There is no combat system in the game: the player’s main weapon is reasonable resource management and the ability to prepare on time.
Therefore, it is worth exploring dangerous territories only after the settlement gets stronger and can withstand additional loads.
How to prove the viability of an Outpost
Each settlement must prove its value to the kingdom. The main mechanic here is the reputation scale, reflecting loyalty to the Scorched Queen. At the same time, there is a reverse scale — forest madness. If the last one is filled first, the game is lost.

There are two ways to earn a reputation:
-
perform randomly generated orders and tasks, the number of which is limited;
-
solve events in the clearing by sending resources in favor of the crown (or keeping them for yourself — but then miss the chance to build trust).
Proper execution of orders allows you to increase loyalty and at the same time reduce the level of chaos. The balance between these scales becomes the main test on the way to victory.
