Nine consecutive Majors without a playoff berth. At some point, that stops being a rough patch and starts being a pattern. Astralis dropped out of IEM Cologne Major 2026 on June 8th, losing to paiN Gaming and heading home early — again. But that storyline was just one of several that made Day 3 of Stage 2 the most decisive day of the tournament so far.

Six matches, three new Stage 3 qualifiers, three teams eliminated. Here is everything that happened.

By Day 3, the Swiss bracket had moved past its Best-of-1 opening phase. Every match was now played in Best-of-3 format, which cuts down on randomness and puts preparation and in-series adaptation front and center. Three matches were advancement games for teams sitting at 2-1, three were elimination matches for teams at 1-2.

Beyond reputation, $80,000 in prize money is distributed within Stage 2 itself. But the bigger prize is access to Stage 3, which runs from June 11 to June 21 and carries a total tournament prize pool of $1,250,000.

Elimination Matches on June 8: Who Did Not Survive the Fourth Round

The first half of the day featured three straight elimination matches — and each one carried its own storyline.

Astralis vs paiN Gaming was the most painful exit of the day, at least symbolically. The Danish side lost 0-2, and while the result itself was not shocking, the context made it hit harder. Nine Majors in a row without reaching the playoffs. The team’s coach later acknowledged that the tournament fell apart through a series of small mistakes — but at a Major, small mistakes compound fast.

MIBR vs B8 delivered the most dramatic series of the day. MIBR took Mirage 13-7, B8 responded on Nuke 13-10, and Ancient went to the Ukrainian side in a tiebreaker. A match that could have gone either way ended with MIBR’s elimination. Frustrating exit for a team that had the tools to go further.

M80 vs Legacy rounded out the elimination slate. Legacy secured their survival and kept their Stage 3 hopes alive, while M80 were sent home alongside Astralis and MIBR.

Advancement Matches: G2, BetBoom, and 9z Book Their Stage 3 Spots

BetBoom Team player celebrates passionately during a Stage 2 match at IEM Cologne Major 2026 in CS2

The evening session brought three advancement matches, all of which ended in cleaner fashion than many expected.

Monte vs BetBoom was the clearest statement of intent from the Russian side. BetBoom arrived in Cologne carrying strong momentum from Stage 1, and they did not let it slip. Monte, who had looked solid through the earlier rounds, had no answers. BetBoom head into Stage 3 with confidence and should not be overlooked.

TYLOO vs 9z was not particularly close. The South American squad controlled both maps — 13-10 and 13-6 — while rifler dgt put up a 40-kill performance across the series. TYLOO now drop to the 2-2 bracket and need a win on the final day just to survive.

BIG vs G2 was the headliner of the day, and G2 delivered exactly what was expected after their upset loss to FUT in Day 2. The European powerhouse dismantled BIG across two convincing maps and booked their Stage 3 ticket without much stress. BIG now face a difficult final day with a negative round differential to deal with.

Six Teams, Three Spots: What the Final Day of Stage 2 Looks Like

IEM Cologne Major 2026 trophy displayed on stage ahead of the decisive Counter-Strike 2 matches

June 9 is the last chance for six teams sitting at 2-2. Three will advance to Stage 3 and join the playoff bracket. Three will pack their bags. Here is where each team stands heading into the final day:

  • paiN Gaming — beat Astralis convincingly and are playing with momentum, one of the clearer favorites to advance
  • Legacy — steady throughout, took down M80 without drama, bring a calm confidence into the final day
  • Monte — capable of stepping up in big moments, but BetBoom already exposed some vulnerabilities
  • B8 — showed real fighting spirit in the three-map thriller against MIBR, experience under pressure counts
  • TYLOO — got handled by 9z in a lopsided series, the psychological reset will be the main challenge
  • BIG — dismantled by G2, carry a -11 round differential into the final day, the hardest road back

The most interesting storyline to watch is whether BIG or TYLOO can recover quickly enough. Both carry negative round differentials, which becomes a tiebreaker factor if the results stay tight. One bad map could end their tournament even with a match win on paper.

Three Key Takeaways from IEM Cologne Major 2026 Stage 2 Day 3

donk and Spirit are in a class of their own right now. Team Spirit finished Stage 2 with a perfect 3-0 record and a +11 round differential. Danil donk Kryshkovets has been posting ratings above 2.0 consistently throughout the event. If they carry this form into Stage 3, they are the team everyone else needs to plan around.

Astralis have a structural problem, not a luck problem. Nine Majors without a playoff appearance is not a statistical anomaly anymore. The coaching staff acknowledged the tournament came apart through accumulated small mistakes — but on a Major stage, that pattern needs to be broken at the organizational level, not just the tactical one.

BetBoom and 9z are no longer dark horses — they are legitimate contenders. Both teams handled their advancement matches with authority and carry real momentum into Stage 3. The question is how far that momentum holds when the bracket gets harder. Stage 3 will give us the answer.

IEM Cologne Major 2026 Stage 3 begins on June 11. Five teams already know what is waiting for them. Three more will be confirmed after the final day of Stage 2 on June 9. With FUT Esports sitting on a +42 round differential and Spirit looking near-untouchable, this Major still has plenty of story left to tell.
