The Story of Jayce

Piltover doesn’t lack for inventors, but only one of them gets called the Man of Progress, and Jayce Talis has never quite decided how he feels about the title.

A Discovery Shared with Viktor

The breakthrough that made his name wasn’t his alone. Working alongside his friend Viktor, Jayce helped uncover the first practical applications of hextech, a discovery that reshaped Piltover almost overnight. The city celebrated him for it, and he has spent much of his life since trying to live up to a reputation he never fully asked for, alongside fellow Piltover inventor Heimerdinger and the rest of the city’s tinkerers.

A Hammer That Cuts Both Ways

What complicates things further is that Jayce has started to notice what his invention actually costs. Hextech didn’t just power Piltover’s rise; it widened the gap between the gleaming city above and the undercity below, and he can no longer pretend otherwise. He carries his hextech hammer as both a tool and a reminder of that divide.

In practice, that hammer does double duty on the battlefield. In Hammer Stance, To the Skies! lets him leap onto an enemy and slow them, while Lightning Field restores mana and scorches anyone nearby; switching to Cannon Stance turns the same ability into Shock Blast, a ranged orb that detonates on impact, and Hyper Charge into a burst of speed. Thundering Blow knocks enemies back at melee range, while its ranged counterpart, Acceleration Gate, boosts the movement speed of allies who dash through it — often to set up a longer-range Shock Blast. His ultimate swaps the Mercury Hammer for the Mercury Cannon and back, extending his range and stripping resistances from the first target he strikes in either form. Few champions embody Piltover’s restless self-reinvention as literally as Jayce does, one stance swap at a time.

Jayce is built as a fighter capable of playing top lane or filling in at range, an unusual flexibility that mirrors his hammer’s own hextech shapeshifting, and his passive, Hextech Capacitor, rewards every swap with a short burst of Move Speed. Mana powers all of it, spent as freely on repositioning as on damage, which suits a character whose entire identity is built on adapting his tools to whatever the moment demands.
