The hunt for the Cow Level in Diablo 4 has taken an unexpected turn. Over the weekend, enthusiasts uncovered new clues—and now they’re no longer just rumors, but clear in-game steps.
The Discord community, which has been investigating this mystery since the original game’s release, has made the most progress. They’ve made significant progress in recent months: they’ve acquired special reagents, figured out a hidden sequence of actions, and even crafted a key that opens a door to an unknown location. Incidentally, it’s there, apparently, that the mythical level awaits.
The Lord of Hatred expansion added several new hidden objectives. Players will have to explore the Skovos Islands, searching for unique items like a mysterious tome hidden in a room not on the map. The reward for this quest is an item whose purpose is still unclear. The clever minds on Discord are already studying it, but to no avail. For now. A PCgamer editor decided to test the entire chain for himself. He followed the community guide step by step, covering the entire map. And here’s where the fun begins. It’s impossible to know if you’re doing everything right. There’s simply no clue.
For example: you have to chase a crow that keeps appearing and then disappearing. At some point, it drops a skull. Then you have to carry the skull to a brazier and set it on fire. There’s no hint or confirmation in the game. Did you manage it? Well done. If not, start over.
Compared to the puzzles at the start of Diablo 4, Lord of Hatred’s riddles are a whole other level of difficulty. The same PCgamer author spent 20 minutes just killing enough corrupt Amazons and equipping their full set of armor. And then—fishing. Yes, fishing was added to Diablo 4. And it was with its help that he retrieved the coffin that led him to a secret dungeon. The community is confident: the cow level is somewhere close. Perhaps you’ll be the one to take the next step.

666 Kill Mechanic and Crafting in Horadric Cube
At some point, you find a new relic. It can be combined with previously obtained ones through the Horadric Cube—a crafting system added in Lord of Hatred. And then an interesting detail comes to light. Some of these items only drop under a strict condition: you need to kill exactly 666 cows. Moreover, the resulting reagent depends on the region in which you killed the last one.

For example, the author of this article never collected the cow’s milk and the rusty halberd. He had to stop. Yet, crafting them together yields another relic, a cow-themed emote, and even a themed title for the character. But there’s a catch. After obtaining such a reagent, a hidden debuff is applied to the hero: further cow kills are temporarily blocked. Progress slows dramatically. Solution? Use alternate heroes. Interestingly, the community is already actively testing this.
Finding the Strange Key and the Abandoned Shack
The final known stage of the quest involves finding a boat and traveling… to a cow farm. Sounds absurd? Perhaps. But it works. Further experiments have shown that the collected reagents can be purified in the Ked Bardu Fountain. Afterward, the Strange Key appears. And this, in turn, opens a hidden passage to the Abandoned Shack.
Approaching triggers a cutscene. From there, it’s just contemplation. Statues of humanoid cows. Cryptic inscriptions like “Do not feed the animals.” And a lonely dungeon-cellar. Inside the shack, players found dozens of corpses and 28 living cows. Killing each one again drops a mysterious item. This time, a Potion of Endurance.
Cow Kings Crown Transmogrification and New Clues
No one yet knows where to go next. But there are still some clues. The Cow Farm occasionally displays a pop-up notification with a series of portals. A mysterious interactive bucket of milk was also discovered there. You can also catch a mythical fish—its description contains a hidden reference to Diablo 3. A trivial detail? Perhaps. But the community doesn’t ignore such things.
The biggest clue, however, is hidden in the wardrobe menu. It concerns the transmogrification entry for the “Crow King’s Crown” helmet. No one has yet unlocked it. The potion itself, from the previous steps, provides a short-term effect without a single hint in the description. And now the main focus of the search is to figure out exactly what needs to be done in those few minutes. It feels like a classic Blizzard puzzle: we don’t say anything outright, but we drop in details.
Lord of Hatred File Analysis and Developer Secrets
Members of the Discord server dedicated to the cow level have full access to Lord of Hatred’s files through data mining. And even they can’t say for sure that the search is over. There are too many blank spots. A new discovery or another patch with an additional step could drop at any moment, and then everything will be turned upside down.
We can only hope that Blizzard isn’t just pulling our leg. That the cow level in Diablo 4 really does exist—we just haven’t found it yet. After all, why would the loading screen say “no cow level” if it didn’t exist? It’s classic developer irony. I don’t want to wait for the third expansion to finally see what horrors the series’ most iconic Easter egg conceals. But if Diablo history is to be believed, it’s worth it.
