Minecraft update 26.2 was released on June 16, 2026, and the biggest surprise was the Sulphur Caves biome. It radically changes the dungeons: instead of the usual gray stone, there are flashes of cinnabar and sulfur, and a strange gas hangs in the air. The developers clearly wanted to add some color to the miners’ daily lives.

Minecraft has always been famous for its diverse biomes—today there are over twenty of them, not counting variations like deep oceans or wind-swept hills. Each update brings something fresh, and the Sulphur Caves are no exception. They fit surprisingly well into the Overworld, although their aesthetics are more reminiscent of the Nether. Bright yellow and red blocks of sulfur and cinnabar are both decorative and fully functional building materials with their own block families. Fans of unconventional design have plenty to offer.

But beauty hides danger. Inside the caves, sulfur lakes are found—hidden underwater, Powerful Sulphur emits gas. Get too close, and you’ll feel a little uneasy. The developers were clearly inspired by real-world geology, which adds to the atmosphere. Incidentally, a new mob, the Sulfur Cube, lives in these caves. It’ll make an unexpected but welcome companion on your treks.

How to find Sulfur Caves? They generate at any depth, and sometimes sulfur pools emerge at the surface—a sure sign that an entire biome is hidden underground. The most reliable way is to dig and keep a close eye out for yellowish or reddish inclusions.

We’ve already answered which biomes were added to Minecraft with update 26.2. But that’s not all. Future updates will also feature the Spotted Forest (currently only available in snapshots). We’ll talk about it in the next part. For now, explore the sulfur depths, build cinnabar houses, and remember to stay away from the gas.

The Dappled Forest in Minecraft and its generation features

The announcement came at Minecraft Live in May 2026. The Dappled Forest is the next biome to join the list, and it’s truly intriguing. Not only is it the first biome in a long time with autumn foliage without mods (after the pink Cherry Grove and the whitish Pale Forest), but it also adds a new structure: the Abandoned Camp. Something like that hasn’t happened in a while.

The main advantage is the poplar trees with their variegated leaves. They produce new wood in a beige-gray hue, perfect for building. And another nice bonus is the red bush, which retains its color wherever it grows. No more surprises when replanting.

The Abandoned Camp dungeon and loot in tents

The camp is a compact structure with a tent, a couple of chests, and useful loot. There’s even a place to spend the night. But don’t get too comfortable—are there guards or traps? The original says “be careful,” so apparently it’s not all peaceful. The biggest surprise, however, is wool steps. Yes, the very ones the builders have been waiting for for years. White ones are lying around right in the tents, meaning you can craft steps from any color of wool. A real gift for architects.

All Minecraft 26.2 Biomes Listed by Dimension

To help you avoid getting lost, here’s an up-to-date list of the main biomes as of version 26.2. I’ve broken them down by dimension and type for convenience.

Overworld (surface and caves):

  • Plains, Forest, Meadow, Dark Forest, Cherry Grove, Pale Forest, Swamp, Mangrove, Taiga, Snowy Plains, Ice Peaks, Savannah, Badlands, Desert, Jungle, Mountains, Mushroom Fields, River, Ocean.
  • Cave Biomes: Deep Dark, Lush Caves, Dripstone Caves. Sulfur Caves are also included here, but they’re not listed because they’re newer.

The Nether: Wasteland, Crimson Forest, Warped Forest, Soul Sand Valley, Basalt Delta.

The End: The End itself and its islands.

Important: there are many more variations. For example, “Mountains” have actually become “Burning Hills”—an umbrella term for seven subtypes, including Razorback Peaks and Snowy Slopes. And oceans are divided into warm, cold, hot, and so on.

Each biome has its own flora, fauna, and unique blocks. Some are rarer than others, so it’s helpful to know where you’re going before you set out. However, you can wander the world and be amazed—the game allows for that. And remember: Dappled Forest and Sulfur Caverns are already here or coming soon, so explore, build, and don’t be afraid of the fumes and woolly steps.

Minecraft’s Rarest Biomes and Finding Rare Biomes

The cube world generates extremely unevenly. While some locations stretch tediously across thousands of chunks, searching for rare biomes can eat up weeks of your real-world time. The chance of a specific zone appearing is strictly tied to the terrain and temperature. One step left, one step right, and the algorithm spawns the default taiga instead of the desired rarity.

Mushroom fields and fly agaric spawns without hostile mobs

Finding this island in the middle of the vast ocean without any third-party software is pure jackpot. The generation here works cleverly, scattering landmasses far from any continents. Why sail there? Firstly, it’s an exclusive habitat for mushroom cows, aka fly agarics (mooshrooms). Secondly, hostile mobs are physically incapable of spawning here, even in pitch-black night without a single light source. A ready-made, safe base right out of the box (which is very handy for hardcore players).

Deep Darkness Biome and Ancient City Beneath the Mountains

This location is buried as deeply as possible—you must search strictly below Y=0, primarily beneath massive mountain ranges. This is the area of greatest risk. Inside, a sinister Skalk awaits you, along with the Ancient City, jealously guarded by a Warden. Engaging in direct combat with it is frankly pointless; you must outmaneuver the mob. People enter this area exclusively through stealth: for chests containing top-tier enchantments and, of course, for Echo Shards.

Ice Peaks and Pale Forest in a Dark Oak Grove

No one would be surprised by ordinary snowy plains, but Ice Peaks are a completely different story. This subspecies of tundra is dotted with enormous spikes. The main feature is that packed ice is mined here with regular tools; you don’t even need the Silk Touch enchantment.

Ice Peaks biome

The Pale Forest, however, stands apart. It spawns in patches right inside another zone—the Dark Forest. Finding a rarity within another rarity? Quite a challenge. Incidentally, the recent Brimstone Caves aren’t elite. They appear at any level, so you can stumble upon them without much effort. Fresh content doesn’t mean uniqueness.

Rare Biome Table and Valuable Mining Blocks

Rare biomes and generation points

Biome Generation point Rarity level Why search for it
Mushroom fields Isolated islands in the ocean Maximum Mushrooms, mycelium, absolute safe zone
Deep dark Levels below Y=0, often under mountains Point rarity Ancient city, echo shards, sculk sensors
Ice spikes Inside snowy plains Rare Packed and blue ice without special tools
Pale garden Patches inside dark forests Rare Unique pale wood and eerie landscape
Cherry grove Mountain slopes in temperate regions Uncommon Pink wood, decorative petals, bees

Search for rare biomes by seed using map scanners

Running on foot, blindly loading the map — A dubious pleasure. The most adequate method is to input your world seed into a special map scanner. You immediately capture the required coordinates and proceed with a purposeful approach. The only exception is the Mushroom Fields: their unnaturally bright shores are easily visible from a boat, even at medium draw distances.
