The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered is now available on Steam, and existing PC owners receive it as a free upgrade within the same store ecosystem. CD Projekt Red has changed far more than the renderer: the release reorganises the skill system, improves monster behaviour and movement, adds cross-platform mod browsing and expands accessibility. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are also included in every base-game owner’s library, so the Steam version now presents the complete adventure without separating the two expansions.

Steam owners can upgrade without buying the game again

The most important PC detail is the upgrade path. Anyone who already owns a physical or digital version can move to Remastered at no charge inside the same platform ecosystem. On Steam, that means the existing licence remains the starting point; players do not need to purchase a second edition merely to receive the new renderer and gameplay work. A returning player should still keep the original save backed up before the first launch, especially if that save depends on an older mod collection.

The two story expansions are now included for base-game owners. This is not a temporary weekend or a bundle that disappears after launch. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine become part of the complete Steam package, which removes an awkward difference between players who bought the original game at different times. The change also matters for mods and New Game Plus because more installations will share the same quest and world content.

The renderer gains path tracing and several modern upscalers

The PC build moves to native DirectX 12 rendering with multithreading and adds path tracing, ray-traced local shadows and ray-traced HairWorks. DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction, FSR 4 with Frame Generation and Anti-Lag 2, and XeSS 2.0 with Frame Generation and Low Latency give different GPU families their own scaling path. Those options should be treated separately from image quality: frame generation can improve motion output, but it does not replace a stable underlying frame rate or remove input delay by itself.

CD Projekt Red has also revised ordinary rendering. The update includes new tone mapping, improved foliage lighting, image-based ambient light, updated reflections, terrain materials and skin scattering. Assets from The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project are integrated into multiple textures and models. Players with older PCs can therefore benefit without enabling every ray-traced effect, although the studio warns that the system requirements have changed and recommends current graphics drivers.

The skill tree has been rebuilt and old points are refunded

Skills are now arranged in a prerequisite tree and each ability has three ranks. Unlocking the next node depends on the path through the tree rather than spending an arbitrary total elsewhere. Because the rules and bonus values changed, saved characters receive their skill points back. The first visit to an old save should be used to rebuild the character deliberately, not to restore every icon in the previous order without reading its new effect.

Equipment can also be reforged for appearance without changing statistics. Yoana and Hattori provide the service, while collecting equipment and diagrams unlocks more looks. Dyes from Blood and Wine remain attached when a piece is reforged. This separates visual preference from combat efficiency and avoids the familiar choice between wearing the strongest item and keeping a coherent armour set.

Combat and movement changes target everyday friction

Many non-boss monsters have revised attacks, counters, movement and reactions. Geralt closes distance more smoothly, target-lock switching responds to camera movement and a dynamic combat camera improves visibility around groups. A new disengage command lets the player leave combat by holding dodge to unlock and then pressing sprint. These changes should be judged in repeated ordinary encounters, where small delays and camera mistakes matter more than a single showcase fight.

Roach receives collision avoidance, cleaner mounting animations and a separate control-sensitivity slider. Geralt can collect loot without dismounting, while nearby items can be grouped into one window and shown in a recent-loot feed. None of these additions changes the story, but together they reduce the menu stops and repeated animations that become most noticeable across a long open-world playthrough.

Cross-platform mods move into an in-game browser

Remastered adds a mod.io browser to the main menu, letting players find compatible creations without placing every file manually. REDkit also gains engine and interface updates. Old mod lists are not guaranteed to work unchanged because scripts, load order and abandoned dependencies can still conflict.

Start with a clean launch and restore mods in groups so a crash or quest conflict can be traced. PC users can continue using manually installed mods that remain compatible.
