Gears of War: E-Day has opened its first public campaign demo at Gamescom. Visitors can play a section from the early hours after the Locust emerge beneath the city of Kalona.

The demo begins during the second act and introduces Bravo Squad. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago fight beside new members Lucas Reyes and Mags Carter.

Kalona City Hall becomes a temporary command centre

The campaign section starts after City Hall has been converted into a COG base. Medical teams treat casualties while military leaders try to understand an attack that has changed the city within hours. The setting places civilians and soldiers in the same crisis. Kalona’s mayor wants to protect the population, while Colonel Trench concentrates on the immediate military threat.

Marcus and the other members of Bravo Squad wait for orders during that disagreement. Their silence reflects discipline and the uncertainty of the first day.

The sequence gives the firefight a clear purpose. The squad is not clearing a random arena. It is responding to a city whose normal systems have collapsed.

The new movement system keeps the familiar heavy feel

The Coalition created a new movement system for E-Day. The team did not copy it directly from an earlier game. Entering cover still feels heavy and deliberate. Players can now slide from a sprint, move around corners and use cover at more heights. Jumping also creates access to rooftops and elevated routes.

These additions make combat spaces less dependent on repeated waist-high walls. Natural objects and damaged buildings can form usable positions. Faster options do not turn Marcus into a light character. The animation and momentum are designed to preserve weight while giving the player more ways to change position.

Enemy groups create tactical combat encounters

The developers describe encounters as a combat puzzle. Enemy types, weapon choice and movement through the arena all affect the solution. One position may protect the player from rifles but leave a side route open.

A stronger enemy can force Marcus away from cover, allowing smaller enemies to close the distance.

Weapons therefore need a clear role. A close-range tool can stop one immediate threat, while accurate fire protects a route across a larger space. The public demo lets players test that structure without editing between scenes. They can see whether an approach succeeds and how the enemies respond when it does not.

The story begins before Marcus and Dom become legendary partners

E-Day takes place during the beginning of the Locust War. Marcus and Dom know each other, but the campaign follows the early development of the partnership familiar from later games. The story covers three nights in Kalona. That short period creates pressure because the characters have little time to understand the enemy or recover from each attack.

Lucas Reyes and Mags Carter add new relationships inside Bravo Squad. Their presence gives the campaign room to show how the group forms under emergency conditions. The prequel setting also allows new players to enter before the events of the original Gears of War. Knowledge of later games adds context but is not required to understand the initial invasion.

The game will be released on October 6, 2026

Gears of War: E-Day is scheduled for October 6. It will launch on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud and Steam, with Xbox Play Anywhere support. Gamescom visitors are testing only a selected campaign section. The full release will contain the larger journey through Kalona and the complete development of Bravo Squad.

Public play can reveal control and performance issues that a trailer cannot show. The studio can study feedback while the final preparation continues. The important change on August 26 is access. The campaign is no longer visible only through recorded footage; players at the show can now control its first major public build.
