GTA 6 Leak Reveals Car Refueling and Sparks Realism Debate - Image 1

Even the most impressive life simulation can quickly start to feel like work—especially when a police chase is interrupted by the need to find the nearest gas station. Players spotted what appears to be a fuel consumption system in leaked GTA VI footage, and the detail has unexpectedly divided the community.

Based on the interface and vehicle-related actions shown in the footage, cars may require gasoline. If the system remains in the final version, players could have to monitor their fuel level and occasionally stop at gas stations.

For now, this is only speculation based on unofficial footage. Rockstar Games has not confirmed the mechanic, while the leaked build may be outdated or contain features that will be changed or removed before release.

Why GTA 6’s Car Refueling Mechanic Has Divided Players

Some fans see fuel consumption as a natural extension of the ideas explored in Red Dead Redemption 2. The mechanic could make vehicles feel more valuable, give gas stations an actual purpose, and create unpredictable situations while traveling across Leonida.

Others fear that realism in GTA VI could begin to restrict the freedom that defines the series. Cars in Grand Theft Auto are often used for only a few minutes: players steal a vehicle, drive to a mission, and then immediately switch to another one. Constantly checking the fuel gauge could therefore become a repetitive chore rather than an engaging gameplay system.

The real issue is not whether fuel exists, but how Rockstar chooses to implement it. The mechanic could work in several different ways:

  • fuel runs out only after particularly long journeys;
  • the tank is automatically refilled between missions;
  • refueling remains an optional role-playing element;
  • an empty tank creates rare situations instead of a constant inconvenience.

Why Players Recalled Gabe Newell’s Comments on Realism

As the debate grew, players brought up comments made by Valve co-founder Gabe Newell in the Half-Life 25th anniversary documentary. Newell explained that realism alone does not automatically make a game entertaining: everyday life already contains enough shopping lists and routine responsibilities.

However, his argument is often presented in an overly simplified way. Newell was not suggesting that all realism is harmful. His broader point concerned how well a game recognizes and responds to the player’s actions. When a system creates meaningful consequences and new possibilities, it can make the world more immersive.

That means refueling cars in GTA 6 would not necessarily become a tedious chore. Fuel could affect police chases, vehicle selection, robberies, or the planning of long journeys, giving the mechanic a genuine gameplay purpose. If it amounts to little more than regularly pressing a button beside a gas pump, however, the concerns raised by players will be understandable.

It is still too early to judge the balance of GTA VI based on a short and unofficial leak. A proper gameplay demonstration should reveal whether Rockstar’s pursuit of realism supports player freedom—or simply adds another meter that must be constantly managed.
