On July 29, 2026, publisher 505 Games and Digital Bros. officially announced the development of a sequel to Wuchang: Fallen Feathers. The original game’s creator, Xi Xuan, will lead the project at his new studio, Indolphinity, with a budget of €21.5 million. Details about the plot and release date have not yet been revealed.

Why did the creator leave Leenzee and found Indolphinity?

The sequel’s development could have become a classic example of how a promising franchise can be lost due to internal squabbles. In early 2026, Chinese media reported that Wuchang: Fallen Feathers creative director Xi Xuan had been fired from Leenzee. Other key employees followed suit—the team refused to switch to an outsourced development model. Leenzee management assumed this would be easier, but in the end, the studio effectively ceased to exist.

It seemed like the end. However, on April 27, 2026, Digital Bros., the owner of 505 Games, acquired the intellectual property rights to Wuchang for approximately €4 million. Then, amassing the right resources and finding the right people was just a matter of time. The holding company contacted Xi Xuan and offered him the opportunity to lead the development of a sequel at his own studio.

Thus, Chengdu Recursive Dolphin Technology Co. Ltd., aka Indolphinity, was born. The name may not sound the most harmonious, but the essence is more important: the creator has returned to his brainchild.

“Wuchang’s story is far from over,” Xi Xuan declared in the official press release. It’s hard to disagree.

Expectations for the sequel: what to expect from Wuchang 2?

The first part was released on July 24, 2025, on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and was also immediately available on Game Pass. Critics gave it a lukewarm reception, with Metacritic sitting at a score of 74. Steam players left over 44,000 “mixed” reviews (a 57% rating).

But the commercial metrics speak louder than any ratings. By March 2026, the game had sold over 1 million copies, and the total audience, including Game Pass and other channels, had reached 5 million players. Revenue for the first eight months exceeded €30 million. Peak concurrent players on Steam were over 131,000. For an indie studio’s debut project, that’s more than impressive.

Wuchang sequel announcement

This success was the main reason Digital Bros. decided to invest €21.5 million in the sequel. A significant sum, especially for a sequel to a game that many had written off six months ago.

What exactly will change in the gameplay is still a mystery. Target platforms and a release date have not yet been announced. However, Xi Xuan has already promised that the team is carefully studying player feedback and meticulously working to make the sequel more nuanced and ambitious. “We remain firmly devoted to our original creative aspirations and cultural foundations,” he emphasized in a statement.

The First Part’s Issues and the Sequel’s Challenges

There’s also a fly in the ointment. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers was the subject of at least one high-profile scandal: after its release, the developers issued a patch that prohibited the killing of certain historical characters and added new dialogue to ensure the plot still made sense. Players perceived this as censorship.

Furthermore, the technical state at launch left much to be desired—Unreal Engine 5 presented surprises in the form of optimization issues. All this has created a vast array of criticism that the sequel’s creators will need to address.

Nevertheless, the announcement itself is already a victory. The team that overcame a breakup, a change of ownership, and the loss of the studio is now working on a sequel. And this can only be called a partial tribute—more like an example of how not to bury a talented project.
