According to SteamDB, discussions about the new features increased by 340% in the first 24 hours of the beta, and this is despite the fact that access to the beta was only opened today. The developers are clearly aiming to reimagine how we perceive open-world tactical RPGs.
The most intriguing feature is the “wanted criminals” system—it echoes mechanics from earlier builds, but now has a whole new network of interactions. Trading stolen goods, tracking suspicions, and, most importantly, a new prisoner tree that fundamentally changes how characters behave outside of combat. Non-combat traits, individual needs, and trust are no longer just statuses, but an entire behavioral model.

Technically, it’s simple: Steam owners right-click Wartales in their library, go to “Properties” → “Betas,” and select the open beta branch. The game will switch to test mode immediately. Testing will last until August 31st, so fans have almost a month to explore the new features.
But the developers are warning: the beta was released in its infancy. “In some cases, icons don’t display, story text disappears, and the balance is, to put it mildly, unfinished,” Shiro Games admits.
