Take-Two’s new $80 price tag for the base edition of Grand Theft Auto 6 risks triggering a dangerous chain of decisions across the entire gaming industry. Ampere Analytics analyst Rhys Elliott warned that blindly emulating this move by other publishers would be a disastrous strategy. Players are willing to pay a premium for a franchise of this scale, but a similar price tag for ordinary titles would provoke a fierce backlash from the audience.

What does the $80 Grand Theft Auto 6 price tag mean for the industry?

Financial giant Bank of America has already proposed making $80 the industry-wide standard for AAA titles, based on the success of GTA 6 pre-orders, where players are willing to shell out even $100. However, analysts caution against confusing loyalty to a specific iconic brand with the market’s general willingness to pay more for any project. Setting the $80 bar for new IPs or mediocre releases is a strategic mistake.

Publishers should stick with the base price of $70, making their money on deluxe titles. It’s more reasonable to collect higher prices from superfans through early access, cosmetic packs, and season passes, while maintaining a reasonable entry threshold for everyone else. The market simply can’t withstand a wholesale price hike.

The behavior of Japanese media giants is most indicative:

  • Nintendo didn’t risk raising prices: Even for the highly anticipated Donkey Kong Bananza, the company kept the price at $70, exercising caution.
  • Pressure from hardware: Against the backdrop of rising console prices, where the next wave of devices could easily surpass $1,000, the cost of the games themselves is becoming a critical point of irritation.
  • Threat of audience churn: Gamers will simply abandon purchasing new releases at launch and wait for sales if prices continue to rise without real justification.

Publishers who fail to adjust the positioning of their titles and capture the mood of gamers in a timely manner will inevitably face a decline in sales. Trying to catch up with Rockstar Games without its audience base is a recipe for financial failure.
