Assassin’s Creed Shadows is preparing to pass the baton — support for the game officially ends a year after release, but its technological foundation will become the base for the entire franchise. The creative director of the series confirmed that innovations introduced in feudal Japan will be transferred to Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, Assassin’s Creed Invictus and Assassin’s Creed Hexe.

How does Assassin’s Creed Shadows affect the future of the series and new Ubisoft games?

Exactly one year has passed since the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Ubisoft is officially curtailing support for the project in order to throw all its strength into upcoming titles. Despite the fact that the new parts will differ in setting and gameplay, the “stuffing” will remain familiar to them. Thierry Dansereau, who was responsible for the artistic side of Shadows, noted in a recent interview with IGN: the game qualitatively closed the long-standing gestalt of fans about Japan, but it also became a testing ground for new-generation mechanics.

According to Dancero, the legacy of the project is primarily enhanced parkour and stealth. The developers have revised the combat system and implemented a number of technologies that are now considered the studio’s internal standard. Apparently, in future installments we will see the same level of interaction with the environment that was laid down in Shadows.

Which Anvil technologies will become the standard in Assassin’s Creed?

The main value of Assassin’s Creed Shadows for Ubisoft is the updated Anvil engine. The technologies that made it possible to create a detailed Japan will not disappear anywhere — they will be integrated into the development of Hexe and the Black Flag remake.

Key features that will become the standard of the series:

  • Micropolygons: A special environment generation system that makes textures and objects as clear as possible even on closer inspection.
  • Real-time Ray Tracing: Ray tracing-based global lighting will now work out of the box in all new projects.
  • Atmos system: Advanced technology for dynamic weather change — it is responsible for realistic wind, rain and cloud formation depending on the conditions.

The developers are confident that Assassin’s Creed Shadows has fulfilled its mission. Now it’s the turn of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced and the ambitious Assassin’s Creed Hexe, which should consolidate the success of the technological leap.
