Bohemia Interactive kicked off its anniversary season—exactly 25 years ago, Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, the game that ushered in the era of realistic military simulations, was released. Now it’s back as Arma: Cold War Assault Remastered, and this isn’t just a remaster. To celebrate its quarter-century anniversary, the studio did three things at once: released a free demo on Steam, open-sourced the Poseidon engine on GitHub, and announced a full remaster.

The full version doesn’t yet have a date—Bohemia says “later.” But the demo is available for download now, and it gives a full idea of what’s changed.

What’s changed in Arma: Cold War Assault Remastered—the main innovations

A remaster is not a remake. The gameplay, campaigns, and mechanics remain intact. All the developers have done is technically revitalize it. The Poseidon engine has been rewritten from scratch in C++20, built with CMake and Clang, and runs natively on 64-bit Windows and Linux. Support for widescreen monitors and modern gamepads has been added, including Steam Deck controls. The engine’s source code is published on GitHub under the GPLv3 license with additional terms. Important: the code is free, but the Arma and Operation Flashpoint trademarks are not. Forks will need to be renamed.

How to download and install the Arma: Cold War Assault Remastered Demo — a free demo on Steam

The demo is now available for free on Steam — a separate page that doesn’t require purchasing the full game.

What’s inside? A standalone piece of the classic sandbox: the islands of Everon, Malden, and Kolguyev, vehicles, AI, and the mission system that once defined the genre. Included is an official set of assets for modders: models, textures, and sounds. You can explore, modify, and build your own missions on them. Essentially, this isn’t just a demo, but an official resource pack for the community.

Arma: Cold War Assault Remastered System Requirements – Minimum and Recommended
