To tell a story without a single remark, the developer must focus on other expressive means. In this case, the visual part becomes a full—fledged “language” – it not only illustrates what is happening, but reveals the hidden meaning of the scenes, conveys the mood and forms the atmosphere of the journey. Musical accompaniment takes on the role of an emotional guide: melodies suggest what the hero feels, enhance drama or, conversely, add lightness.
Since this is a platformer, gameplay also forms an important part of the experience — it is through control, movement dynamics and interactive elements that the player feels the vividness of what is happening. Spirit of the North focuses on exploring snowy landscapes and consistently solving puzzles. There are no familiar dialogues or narrative head-on: the world tells its story through the details of the environment, and each new location pushes for the discovery of the secrets of the northern nature.
Infuse Studio chose an unusual path — to create an adventure where the main focus is on contemplation, atmosphere and a gentle pace of passage. That’s why it’s so interesting to see how well the authors have managed to combine the visual style, mysterious surroundings and variety of puzzles into a single, truly fascinating concept.

The story of Spirit of the North begins almost cinematically — with a leisurely journey through snow-covered mountain ranges. We find ourselves in the skin of an inquisitive fox, which, following the wind that rasped under its paws, stumbles upon an ancient path marked by stone structures. And only when we see the skeleton of a monk, twisted by centuries of ice storms, do we realize that we have traces of a vanished culture in front of us. But what threw these ascetics into harsh lands and led to their tragic end?
The answers are hidden deeper, and we begin to search for them together with the spirit of the fox, an ephemeral guardian whom we meet in one of the former sanctuaries. This disembodied companion gives us magical abilities and helps us overcome mystical obstacles. But soon something dark gets in the way: poisonous roots crawl across the northern land, like traces of an ancient curse. Having reached one of the infected areas, the fox falls, poisoned by harmful fumes. Then the spirit does not hesitate to transfer the body of its new friend to a sacred place and transfer its own power to him. Magic brings the hero back to life, but the ghostly benefactress almost disappears — her radiance fades, turning into a tiny spark.
This is how the real journey begins — fast-paced, fabulous and disturbing. The heroes will have to unravel the mysteries of a lost civilization, go through the ruins and clear the northern expanses of the black contamination rooted in the earth. Each new location becomes a step towards solving the mystery and another reason to look closely at the world around you.

Traveling through it is a real pleasure. The spaces in the game are huge, sometimes grandiose, which creates a sense of open adventure and freedom of movement. The graphics combine realism with soft cartoon accents, which gives the frame a special charm and enhances the visual rhythm. When all this is accompanied by instrumental music inspired by the harsh and beautiful nature of Iceland, genuine magic arises: the world seems alive, wild and inviting with mysteries. The developers subtly convey the atmosphere in which the player involuntarily plunges into an almost meditative state, listening to every sound, trying to grasp the context through the details of the environment and the visual language of the narrative. It is these details — ruins, symbols, and relief shapes — that form the basis of the plot, which unfolds without words.
It is worth noting how well the level design works with puzzles. Local puzzles weave through space, using large-scale zones and forcing you to think ahead: compare what you see, build chains, keep in mind small clues hidden in the architecture and structure of the world. But savvy alone is not enough — platforming also plays an important role. Some episodes require instant reaction, jumping accuracy, and the ability to quickly overcome obstacles, combining logical thinking with dynamics.

Spirit of the North’s unique jumping mechanics and magical abilities
The jumping mechanics in Spirit of the North are immediately striking in their strangeness. Jumping here feels a little viscous, as if the hero is immersed in a dense stream of air. The fox lacks the flexibility of a real animal — it moves somewhat stiffly, which affects the angle of rotation and the trajectory of the jump. Therefore, before each maneuver, you have to carefully build a position and choose the appropriate slope. But the game generously compensates for this limitation: when moving across platforms, the character literally “sticks” to surfaces and is able to climb slopes at unthinkable angles. Even if you miss slightly, the fox obediently clings to the edge of the ledge and pulls himself up. The game does not punish minor mistakes — on the contrary, this soft “viscosity” turns into a kind of buffer, smoothing out the lack of maneuverability. But the long jump is a completely different story. Here, the hero reveals himself completely: his body stretches with such grace and strength that he is able to reach the most hidden corners of large locations, enhancing the sense of freedom and exploratory dynamics.
As soon as the passage begins, it becomes clear: the developers were not going to lead the player by the hand. There are no intrusive hints or arrows, as in modern casual projects. On the contrary, Spirit of the North forces you to turn on logical thinking, carefully study your surroundings and recall the atmosphere of old-school games, where every step, every route and every find was the result of your own observations. As soon as you realize that many secrets are hidden in seemingly inaccessible places, you begin to look at the world with different eyes — you study each ledge, calculate possible trajectories, and test new approaches. This makes exploration not just a part of the gameplay, but a full-fledged intellectual task.

However, the real magic of gameplay is revealed through the abilities of the reborn fox. The main mechanics are based on his ability to channel magical energy. Over time, the hero gains three key skills: a destructive “explosion of spiritual flame” capable of clearing traces of dark forces; the ability to transform into an incorporeal entity and pass through obstacles or run through water; as well as magical jumps that unlock new elements of platforming and enhance the verticality of passage.
Each use of force discharges the hero, so the energy reserve has to be replenished. This is done with blue flowers, which are peculiar energy sources that respond to the loud barking of a fox. Yes, our red-haired protagonist can bark as well as a dog, and this funny element becomes an important part of interacting with the world. By charging energy and activating ancient totems, we trigger the mechanisms of a long-abandoned civilization. And gradually the path leads us to a mysterious mountain — the probable heart of the very evil that poisons the northern lands.
Gameplay issues and technical flaws in Spirit of the North
Speaking of the roughness of the project, it is worth noting several features that may affect the experience of the passage. Some levels are amazing in scale — the locations here are sometimes so vast that they create a sense of grand adventure. However, these spaces are not always filled with meaning: while searching for solutions to puzzles, the player often combs through huge areas of the map where there is simply nothing to see or explore. In certain chapters, this leads to unnecessary wandering and loss of pace. The penultimate level stands out in particular — its size is so gigantic that at first it is literally confusing. But over time, you realize that this is part of the idea: a kind of challenge, justified by the plot and leading to an impressive finale. The conclusion of the story is really pleasing — the denouement feels like a well-deserved reward for your efforts and perseverance.

Another feature of the gameplay is the need to run back and forth a lot. There is no death in the game in the usual sense — there is no life counter, and the player does not have to start the level again after a mistake. But if you miss a jump or perform an acrobatic element incorrectly in a dynamic puzzle, the game sends you to backtracking. It’s not always pleasant, but it still feels softer than going through the entire chapter again. This approach stretches the gameplay slightly, but it retains a sense of rhythm and allows you not to fall out of the atmosphere of adventure.
Unfortunately, the technical side of the project is less stable than the artistic one. The game periodically needs additional “polishing”, which manifests itself in some bugs. In my case, the problems started with chapter five, when activating shaman staffs becomes mandatory to advance the story. To replenish the magical energy of the blue flowers, I put the staff on the ground — and it instantly fell through the textures. It was not possible to return to him or find a replacement, and without the staff, the plot simply stops. I had to restart the chapter through the menu, which noticeably knocks me out of the dive.
I especially remember the technical problems that a player may encounter:
-
The disappearance of objects falling through textures.
-
Mechanisms are blocked if objects are activated in the wrong order.
-
The lack of alternative solutions when an error actually forces you to restart a chapter.
-
Rare breaks in geometry, allowing you to get out of the “trap”, but breaking the atmosphere.
In another episode, it was necessary to fill a tank with water by activating four wells. I did it in the wrong order, which caused one of the key mechanisms to lock up. The game did not provide an alternative solution to the puzzle. I had to be smart and do a little parkour — after a series of attempts, I found a gap in the textures, almost like in speedrunner tricks, and got out of a situation that would otherwise have been impossible to fix. Such moments are both annoying and amusing, but they make it clear that the project could use additional optimization.
