In recent years, the video game industry has been literally flooded with projects about war — it seems that every second novelty is dedicated to battles and combat operations. But there are only a few really serious, believable and emotionally intense games about a real war. When it comes to authenticity, atmosphere and respect for the topic, the legendary series Call of Duty and Medal of Honor come to mind, which managed to convey the heroism and tragedy of battles. However, “Behind enemy Lines” deservedly stands next to them — despite the strategic genre, the game conveys the spirit of war no worse, and sometimes even deeper, than many action blockbusters.

Despite the complex subject matter, the game Soldiers: Heroes of World War II has every chance to conquer the Western audience. If Codemasters Studio manages to handle the publishing part competently, the project can show excellent sales outside of Europe. And this is not surprising — although war is a terrible, destructive phenomenon, the game itself makes you feel like a real hero who is fighting for justice and freedom.
VTB (as the project is abbreviated) touches on a topic that is close to everyone, but it does so in a language that is simple and understandable to the viewer. The events of the Second World War have never been presented so vividly and easily. Before that, the genre of military tactical strategies was dominated by “Close Combat” and “Blitzkrieg”, but they never managed to make the genre truly widespread. Now everything can change — even recognized hits like “Commandos” will have to make room.
In fact, it is with Commandos that VTB has the most in common. The action takes place in real time, and the player controls a small but brave squad performing dangerous tasks behind enemy lines — one involuntarily remembers “Behind Enemy Lines”. Despite the numerical superiority of the enemy, our fighters take their toll due to powerful weapons, high endurance and precise tactical calculation. Each mission becomes a kind of puzzle where strategy and attention to detail are important.

The visual part deserves special mention. The Soldiers: Heroes of World War II graphics engine creates a strikingly realistic “live” picture. Literally anything can be destroyed here, from fragile fences and cozy houses to military equipment. At the same time, the process of destruction looks incredibly authentic: a neat house first loses its roof, then its walls, and only then turns into a pile of rubble and ashes. Burning tanks, smoking ruins and crumbling walls don’t just look spectacular — they create an atmosphere of real chaos of war.
The artists approached this with love and attention to detail, which is why it is sometimes even a pity to destroy such beauty. But that’s exactly the power of Soldiers: Heroes of World War II — the game combines scale, dynamics, and visual enjoyment, turning every mission into a cinematic experience.

Why Men of War is still considered one of the best military strategy games
Completing missions in “Behind Enemy Lines” is a different story. Even at a light level of difficulty, it was impossible to relax: every few minutes I had to save myself in order not to make a mistake. And it also happened that it was saved every twenty seconds, just so as not to lose progress. Artificial intelligence is surprisingly well developed here — opponents act logically, react quickly to what is happening and sometimes behave unpredictably. Thanks to this, the game keeps you in suspense and does not let you go for a minute. The further you go, the more dynamic things become. The main role here belongs not to technology, but to man — to each unit. One soldier is able to turn the tide of the entire operation: to clear the base, remain unnoticed and calmly evacuate. It is in these moments that the real excitement is born.
The sound design creates a unique atmosphere. The music adds drama and tension, perfectly emphasizing what is happening. Every sound is made with love: the hum of machinery, the rustle of leaves, the crackle of burning houses — everything sounds realistic and immerses you into the events. Even reloading a weapon gives you a pleasant feeling of being on the battlefield.
The team system in the game works well, although it sometimes makes you nervous. Soldiers can be given orders, but they don’t always follow them the way they want to. For example, when trying to pass quietly and unnoticeably, a fighter sometimes decides to act according to his own scheme, goes out into the open and immediately dies from enemy fire. These little things were annoying, but at the same time made the game lively and unpredictable.
The destruction system was particularly enjoyable. In “Behind enemy lines” you can destroy almost everything — buildings, fences, machinery, trees. Any object can become a shelter, even if it is not the most reliable, but sometimes it is he who saves the life of a fighter. Vehicles and tanks explode with realistic physics, and it’s a pleasure to watch this spectacle. Even today it looks spectacular, but in 2004 it was a real delight.

Each soldier has a backpack where he stores ammunition, weapons and a first-aid kit. The weight system forces you to monitor the load — an overloaded unit quickly runs out of steam and loses mobility. This little thing makes the game even more believable: every step and every decision matters.
The game controls are simple and intuitive. The interface is intuitive, and the bottom panel on the screen helps you quickly navigate the available actions. After just a couple of minutes, you can safely go into battle, fully understanding what works and how.
Training missions are a special pleasure. They introduce you to the basic mechanics of laying mines, repairing machinery, pumping fuel, shooting and stealth. These tasks do not just teach, but gradually immerse you in the atmosphere of the campaign, helping you get used to it and feel like a real commander.
To complete the game as efficiently as possible, it is worth remembering a few simple rules:
-
always save yourself before any serious action;
-
Don’t overload the fighters — keep an eye on their stamina;
-
Use the environment as a shelter;
-
Act slowly and deliberately — haste is fatal here;
-
Listen carefully to the sounds — they often betray the enemy before you see him.
The graphics for 2004 looked impressive. Of course, there were other military strategies like “Blitzkrieg” nearby, but the visual effects in “Behind Enemy Lines” looked more vivid and expressive. Realistic explosions, smoke, and the play of light and shadow created a presence effect. Minor bugs were sometimes encountered, but they were almost not noticeable against the background of the overall picture.
Multiplayer has become a real godsend. The army versus army battles were exciting, especially if multiple players were involved. Exploding tanks, collapsing buildings, chaos and strategy — all this created a unique drive. Tactics played a key role: without them, even a strong army would quickly turn into a mountain of metal and ashes.
I don’t claim to be a great critic, but I’ll be honest.: Behind Enemy Lines remains one of my favorite games. She’s complicated, but she’s honest. It requires patience, but it rewards you handsomely for your ability to think and calculate every step. On a personal scale, it’s a solid nine out of ten. It’s not just a strategy, but an experience that tests your attention, stamina, and intuition. And no matter how many years have passed, this game is still capable of evoking the same feeling of excitement as when you first clicked “start mission”.
