After the high-profile split between Konami and Hideo Kojima, the cult Metal Gear series seemed to hang in the air. Despite the fact that the publisher has repeatedly emphasized that this is one of its key brands, there have been almost no real steps towards new games. The exception is the strange and extremely controversial Metal Gear Survive, which fans prefer not to remember, and several re-releases, which can hardly be called a full-fledged development of the franchise. But it seems that the situation has begun to move from dead center. The project’s producer said that the company is preparing a new team of specialists who will work on future parts of MGS. And as a test, they were entrusted with nothing less than working on a remake of the cult third part – Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.

Although the title of Metal Gear Solid Delta does not include the word “remake”, Konami itself calls the project exactly that in press releases and social networks. And this is a little confusing. Today, players understand a remake not just as “new graphics”, but much deeper changes. Remember Resident Evil – they did not limit themselves to visuals, but seriously updated the gameplay and expanded the plot. Or Mafia: Definitive Edition, where they remade the entire city and added cinematic quality to the cut scenes. Even Konami’s own remake of Silent Hill 2 showed that the company is ready to change everything – from combat and puzzles to voice acting and locations.

But Metal Gear Solid Delta cannot be classified as such a radical project. From a technical point of view, it is certainly a remake – the game was ported to Unreal Engine 5 instead of FOX Engine. However, the rest of the approach was as if they were carefully moving a museum exhibit: carefully, without breaking or “updating” more than necessary. The story remained the same, the dialogues were not touched or even re-dubbed, the animations were preserved down to the smallest detail. Traveling through the levels is also familiar – short loading screens still flash between locations, there is no “open world” here.

Is this good? A difficult question. Of course, many fans dreamed of bolder steps – for example, about redesigned locations, a system for healing wounds right in battle, a simplified introduction without an excessive number of cutscenes, or a rethought battle with The End. Such an approach, albeit risky, would certainly have caused discussions, as once happened with Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, which some fans idolize, and others criticize.

On the other hand, maybe it was MGS3 that did not require revolutionary changes. The controls are outdated — and that’s exactly what they’ve updated. Delta offers two modes: “Original” and “New”. In the first, the camera is firmly fixed above the character’s head, aiming is done with a separate button, like in older versions. In the second, the camera is placed behind the hero’s shoulder, and the game has turned into a familiar third-person action game, where you can freely move and shoot at the same time. To make it not seem too easy, the developers added ballistics — hitting a tranquilizer in the head from a long distance is now much more difficult.

There is another important plus for domestic players: a full translation into Russian. The original had Cyrillic, but it looked ridiculous — like “Black Cave: Underground Entrance” and other oddities. There are no such errors in Delta: the menu, subtitles, tips and the entire interface are well translated.

Comparison of the remake with the classic version of Metal Gear Solid 3

Now everyone can touch history, and it is for this reason that many people love Metal Gear Solid. The plot of the third part takes us to the era after the Cuban Missile Crisis: in the role of an agent with the call sign Naked Snake, we secretly go to the USSR. The task is to find the Soviet engineer Sokolov, who is hidden in an abandoned factory. We must not be caught under any circumstances – after all, the appearance of an American soldier on the territory of the Union will become an international scandal, and then there will be no help to wait. If we fail, we will have to get out of it ourselves.

Sokolov is found, but taking him home, of course, is not so easy. Enemies, conspiracies and betrayals stand in the way, and along with them, new allies. The mission, which should have taken a few hours, turns into an entire epic journey lasting about ten hours of play. This is the charm of MGS3: it skillfully combines the incompatible. Sometimes you see documentary footage of Kennedy and Khrushchev’s speeches, sometimes a fight with a bee man whose swarms form a Thompson submachine gun. Sometimes serious conversations about betrayal and going over to the enemy’s side, sometimes funny scenes with Ocelot, who literally “meows” for his subordinates. Even now, such contrasts are rare in games, and the developers of the remake did the right thing by not rewriting what Kojima and his team came up with back in 2004.

But the picture has changed significantly. As often happens with remakes, it seems that the game has always looked like this, although in fact the difference is huge. The forests and jungles have become much more lively: dense foliage, sunbeams breaking through the crowns, small animals hiding in the grass. The swamps look viscous and dangerous, the rivers are clean, and the crocodiles in them are frighteningly realistic. The characters’ faces have become more expressive, their clothes are more detailed, the lighting and special effects are impressive. It’s obvious that a lot of work has been put into it.

And all of this is based on a game from twenty years ago. Once again, you are convinced that Metal Gear Solid 3 is truly ahead of its time. The directing style, the staging of cut scenes, the variety of missions, the unforgettable boss fights – all of this has been preserved and today gives that very feeling for which people return to the series.

The locations have remained compact, but each one works like a small sandbox. Do you want to shoot from a tranquilizer? Please. Do you prefer a noisy action game with a machine gun? This is also possible. You can sneak and scare the guards, forcing them to drop useful things, you can drop a beehive on the enemy or throw a snake at him. Or you can hide in a cardboard box and pass by. No one is stopping you from getting distracted by hunting for crabs or knocking fruit off trees to restore your strength (on PS5, you can even hear your stomach growling from the gamepad). Unique mechanics, such as manually healing wounds or selecting camouflage to match the environment, still make the game stand out from other stealth action games.

Whether modern graphics are needed for this is up to the player to decide. After all, on most platforms you can take Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1, which has several classic parts at once, albeit without the Russian language and with an outdated picture. But the remake is an opportunity to look at a familiar story with a fresh look.

In addition to the visuals, there are also new conveniences. Camouflage now changes instantly, without long menus. Slow walking in a crouch has been added – previously it was only in the 3DS version. Progress is saved automatically, you no longer need to call on the radio. And for collectors, there are new secrets scattered around: in addition to the old frogs, there are now rubber ducks hiding in each zone, and the pause menu allows you to track everything down to the smallest detail – how many enemies you killed, how many times you raised the alarm, what items you found. Even two additional mini-games have returned to life, one of which was almost always cut before.

All the Pros and Cons of Metal Gear Solid Delta

No matter how Konami’s remake turned out, it would still not have been possible to please all fans of the franchise. Radical changes would have caused particular discontent among fans against the backdrop of the conflict with Kojima – it is easy to imagine accusations that “the creator was kicked out, and now his work is being ruined.” Therefore, the company chose the most cautious path: carefully transferred the original to a new engine and did not even remove Hideo Kojima’s name. In Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, it flashes on the screen more often than in the PS2 version itself.

In terms of gameplay, the project has stood the test of time – the mechanics are still as strong and exciting. But visually, the game literally blossomed: MGS3 never looked so rich and cinematic. But the question arises – if the team assembled for the future Metal Gear could not add anything new even to the remake of the old game, should we expect fresh ideas in their subsequent projects?
