The story of a brave prince who, overcoming mountains of obstacles, saves a beautiful girl from captivity, has long since become a hackneyed plot. Even before the appearance of the first video games, this fairy tale had become boring, but, oddly enough, it is still in demand. Time after time, developers return to it, sometimes investing considerable budgets in such projects.
A striking example is the legendary series about the nameless Prince of Persia, who again and again risks his life to save his beloved. Its popularity can be explained by impressive graphics, an unusual combat system and the special magic of an oriental fairy tale, which you want to return to.
But here the question arises: what did the guys from Number None count on when they decided to create a two-dimensional platformer in the spirit of good old Mario, and even with a plot that, it would seem, is already completely familiar to everyone?

At first glance, Braid seems to take us back to childhood, to the era of Mario. Again, the story of a kidnapped princess, familiar two-dimensional obstacle course levels, identical enemies and bright backgrounds that seem to have come from the pages of old platformers. All this evokes a slight sense of déjà vu. But if you stay in this world a little longer, it becomes clear: this is not another copy of a hit from the past, but something much more sophisticated. If Mario mainly tested our reaction speed, then the brainchild of the Number None studio makes our brain work. Here, obstacles are not just obstacles, but well-thought-out puzzles, the solution of which brings us closer to the goal.
Our hero does not have special physical skills and is not armed with a dozen superpowers. All we have is the ability to competently use available opportunities. And this “everything” in fact turns out to be much more valuable than a set of standard tricks.

Tim – that’s the name of the protagonist – is far from the image of a familiar action hero. Before us is not a special forces soldier or a super soldier, but an ordinary guy in a suit and tie, who for some reason went on a dangerous journey. His beloved was kidnapped by a monster and imprisoned in one of the five towers. In words, everything is simple: go through all the buildings and save the princess. But in reality, the path lies through different worlds filled with chasms, traps and predatory creatures. And even if we manage to get to the fortress, it turns out that our beloved is in another place again. We have to start the journey anew, fortunately, portals to already completed levels open right from Tim’s basement.
The main feature of the hero is the ability to control time. He can rewind events back, and the inscription “Game Over” simply does not exist in this game. Made a mistake by jumping into the enemy’s mouth? Calmly return to the past and try again. But there is a nuance: some objects highlighted in green are not subject to this effect and continue to act as if nothing had happened. It is due to these features that most of the tasks in Braid are tied to time manipulation. Sometimes you have to study the level up and down to understand at what point to press the coveted “rewind” button.

Pros and Cons of Braid: Is It Worth Playing?
Tim’s adventures in Braid, although performed in a two-dimensional format, do not lose any of their atmosphere. On the contrary, the game captivates you from the very first minutes: bright, as if hand-drawn backgrounds, levels of varied layout and cute enemies, which even in their “ferocity” resemble… pink rabbits. Such a presentation will easily charm both children and adults.
True, there is a downside to the coin – you are unlikely to want to replay the game. As soon as you solve the last puzzle, the magic of novelty disappears, and the process turns into a repetition of already familiar actions.

And yet, Number None managed to exceed expectations, creating not an ordinary clone, but an atmospheric and smart arcade. The plot here is seasoned with lyrical and philosophical digressions, the puzzles do not let you get bored for a second, and the cartoonish graphics are pleasing to the eye. It’s a pity that all the pleasure will not last more than twenty hours. Let’s hope that the sequel will see the light of day.
