Usually, the appearance of a second part of an indie game is a sign that the first attempt was successful. The authors managed to hook the players, earned their trust and are now ready to offer something more large-scale and carefully developed. At such a moment, attention to the project can go far beyond the usual audience – sometimes large publishers also take a closer look at the independent studio, after which the “indie” status is already a thing of the past.

Red Solstice 2: Survivors is just in this category. If the Croatian team Ironward created the original entirely on their own, then the publisher 505 Games joined the sequel. They were the ones who organized the online presentation of the project, where they invited us. During the presentation, the developers spoke in detail about the unique features of Red Solstice 2 and let us touch the beta version, the release of which was scheduled for June 17, 2021.

The events of the game unfold some time after the finale of the first part. The future turned out to be not so bright: humanity was forced to leave Earth and move to Mars. The reason is not a romantic dream of space colonization, but a catastrophe caused by the deadly STROL virus. This parasite devastated its home planet, and then, as if pursuing its victims, moved to the Red Planet, threatening the very existence of the Homo sapiens species.

STROL is not distinguished by sophistication – it acts according to the classic scenario, giving birth to hordes of ugly mutants. Fangs, claws, tails, chitinous shells and other murder weapons – all this is an arsenal capable of tearing apart anyone who gets too close.

On Mars, the virus does not choose its victims – everyone is under threat, from employees of powerful corporations to residents of small colonies. There is enough competition and intrigue between these groups, but there are also those who think not only about their own interests. The mysterious organization “Founders” unites those who are ready to act decisively. It is you who will lead its combat unit to challenge the infection and give humanity at least some hope for the future.

True, the story here is more of a background decoration. Dialogues and videos are in no hurry to reveal details, the characters flicker so that you barely have time to remember their names, and sorting out the confusing events through the in-game encyclopedia is an amateur’s occupation. The plot does not grab the heart, and therefore the game bets on something else.

Before we get back to talking about the plot and how appropriate it is in such games, let’s figure out what the gameplay itself is. Judging by the screenshots and videos, this is an isometric action game in which the main task is to mow down hordes of monsters that outnumber you using a variety of weapons, from familiar guns to more exotic ones. The first associations, of course, are drawn to Alien Shooter – and for good reason: visually, Red Solstice 2 really is related to it. But this similarity is deceptive. Once you start playing, it becomes clear that you have a completely different story in front of you.

The pace of the game here is much more measured. Forget about the lightning-fast runs and chaotic “kite” of enemies, which were the calling card of Alien Shooter. In RS2, you either methodically defend important points, or slowly and carefully move towards the goal. The speed of fighters in massive power armor clearly does not encourage sprints, and the available “dash” is more likely to serve to escape from the clutches of a particularly dangerous enemy than for rapid maneuvers.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the skills. Shooting here is automated – the hero himself opens fire on enemies within reach. But everything that concerns skills and special equipment – be it grenades, mines or first aid kits – remains entirely in the hands of the player. And here it is already important to monitor the energy consumption and the recharge time of abilities, otherwise at a critical moment you can be left without the necessary tool.

The tactical component is the second key feature of the game. Red Solstice 2 is built on the interaction and competent synergy between six classes: assault, medic, fire support fighter, demolition man, sniper and scout. In the beta version, you could try out only the first three, but even this is enough to understand that the game is clearly designed for team play. AI bots, even with different classes, are not able to fully replace live partners. Their set of commands is too meager, and their reaction is far from ideal. As a result, in single-player mode, the gameplay feels more viscous and slow, and in places even boring.

Ironward openly claims to have created a new genre — Real-Time Tactical Battlefield. It sounds grand, and it’s hard to judge the veracity of this statement based on the press release alone, but there is definitely some truth to it. I wouldn’t call it a revolution, but rather a successful fusion of proven ideas from different games. The appearance and basic concept of “shooting hordes of monsters” evoke memories of Alien Shooter, the activated abilities clearly echo ARPGs and MOBAs, and the cooperative gameplay and interaction between classes are reminiscent of Left 4 Dead and Alien Swarm.

Added to this is a strategic mode: researching technologies, managing barracks, an arsenal, upgrading a base and choosing missions — all this is easy to associate with XCOM. Even the feeling of impending doom in the form of infection gradually consuming the planet is here. And the battles themselves, although they take place in real time, encourage thoughtful actions more than instant reflexes.

The strategic component noticeably influences the process. If the management of the base (or rather, the orbital ship above Mars) is made rather simplified, then the character leveling leaves only positive impressions. Increasing levels, learning new skills, improving power armor – all this allows you to create a truly unique hero. This not only increases replayability, but also gives a break from endless shootouts.

Inspiration is noticeable both in the setting and in the plot. The design of the monsters clearly owes something to Alien and Dead Space, and the episodes of defending key points easily evoke associations with the attack of arachnids on a military base from Starship Troopers. If you want, I can make a second, more lively version of the text with an emphasis on the emotional style and gaming metaphors.

Is Red Solstice 2: Survivors Worth Playing in 2025?

If you played the first part, then you already know roughly what to expect from the sequel. Fans of cooperative battles will not be left out either – although Survivors has a single-player campaign, the game was originally created for co-op play with friends. However, it is a bright and memorable plot in a popular setting that is clearly lacking here. This may seem like a strange reproach for a genre that primarily relies on gameplay, but imagine the same mechanics transferred to the Warhammer 40K universe – I would buy such a project without hesitation, and I am sure there would be many like-minded people.

What makes Red Solstice 2: Survivors especially attractive to multiplayer fans:

• The ability to get together with friends and act as a single whole.
• Highly dynamic battles, where every second matters.
• A variety of missions requiring different approaches and tactics.

However, the old truth that a good co-op can pull off almost any game remains in force. In the case of Red Solstice 2: Survivors, this is doubly true – the project is definitely worth the attention of those who love dynamic multiplayer, where success directly depends on the well-coordinated work of the team.
