Another cult game that started a whole series has received its updated version — the so-called “enhanced edition.” Such reissues have become a common practice in the gaming industry lately. However, until the release itself, it remained unclear how deeply the developers would revise the original. Now that the updated version of Borderlands has finally been released, it’s time to figure out what exactly has changed and how much the game has actually improved.

If you already owned the base version of the game on Steam, you could get the enhanced edition absolutely free – regardless of whether you bought the add-ons separately or not. A generous gesture from the developers. But whether it is now possible to upgrade to the enhanced version by buying the regular edition somewhere on a third-party site is an open question. What’s new in the updated version?

• The textures have become sharper — the game now looks much brighter and juicier thanks to high resolution and other technical improvements.
• The interface has been redesigned — it has become more convenient and informative, new elements have appeared that make navigation easier.

What changes await players in the Borderlands remaster

At first glance, it becomes clear that the improved edition is noticeably more pleasant than the original. The image has become sharper, the detail is higher, and the game in places literally sparkles with new colors thanks to additional lighting effects and soft shadows. Borderlands has remained true to itself in spirit, but now its world feels more alive and bright.

However, there are no ideal releases, and immediately after the release, players began to encounter certain technical problems. Some graphic functions worked unstably, and although there were not so many bugs, three of them were especially often discussed.

At the same time, despite these rough edges, the remaster works quite stably and does not require top-end hardware – which in itself is a plus. Among the truly successful changes is the redesigned interface. It has not only become more modern and visually neater, but also received functional improvements that directly affect the convenience of the game.

Firstly, the game now has a full-fledged mini-map – it seriously helps to navigate in winding and complex locations. Secondly, task markers are now displayed directly on the screen with an indication of the distance to the target – a small detail that makes completing quests much easier. And thirdly, useful functions have been added, such as the ability to “block” the desired item or weapon so as not to accidentally sell it in the store. True, there were some strange decisions here. For example, if you want to buy grenades or rockets, you will have to scroll through the list of goods manually, whereas before everything fit on one page. And the error window when there is not enough money, which offers to choose between “OK” and “Cancel”, can be confusing – after all, the “Cancel” button in this context does not make sense at all.

New reward and loot system

Despite the noticeable changes in details, the core of the game has remained virtually untouched — as paradoxical as it may sound. The combat system, physics, character leveling, and their abilities all work the same as before. The developers decided not to break what already works well, but focused on improving rewards and increasing the value of loot.

Now, when defeating bosses, the player is guaranteed to receive at least one purple-quality epic item. In addition, in places where the reward previously barely covered the effort, additional chests with useful loot now appear. The final boss, who was not distinguished by his generosity before, now pleases with much more significant trophies if you cope with him.

Here’s what has changed in the reward system:

• Bosses are now guaranteed to give a purple (epic) item.
• Additional chests have been added to locations with previously modest loot.
• The final boss has become more generous: rare items have given way to an impressive reward.
• Golden chests have appeared, opened with special keys from the Shift Code system.

If this is not enough, you can always look for golden chests in peaceful zones. They are opened with special keys that can be obtained by entering promo codes from the developers through the Shift Code system. These codes are published from time to time on the official channels of the game, so it is worth following the news. What if you have already collected the entire impressive collection of weapons from the original version? No problem! A new batch of legendary equipment from the legendary company Gearbox has been added to the game. You will be given several copies right away, and the rest is a matter of searching and luck while exploring the world.

As for the promised automatic collection of resources, here the innovation turned out to be not as complete as we would like. Money, first aid kits and ammo are indeed automatically picked up – but only if they fell from enemies or destroyed objects. Everything else – the contents of boxes, chests and other containers – will still have to be collected manually. And, alas, plot items are not picked up automatically either, which is inconvenient, especially in missions where you have to collect dozens of little things.

And finally, a nice cosmetic bonus. The game has new skins for the heroes’ heads. There aren’t many of them, but they are all available from the very beginning. It’s especially nice when you want to stand out a little from your partners using the same character.

Is the first Borderlands remaster worth playing in 2025?

Everything that was added in the re-release was only good for the game – a rare case when improvements really improve without breaking the original atmosphere. Small conveniences made the gameplay a little friendlier, but did not destroy the balance. And the updated graphics, although not amazing, still look fresher and more pleasant compared to the original version.

If you have not played the first Borderlands before, this re-release is a great chance to get acquainted with the origins of the series. And for Pandora veterans, this is a reason to return to familiar lands, look at the classics from a new angle and while away the time while waiting for the third part.
