Rumors of multiplayer for STALKER 2 have been circulating since its release, but there was no confirmation. Then, at Gamescom, journalists extracted fresh details from GSC Game World. Evgeny and Maria Grigorovich admitted that a free multiplayer update is still in the works. However, no one even gave an approximate timeframe.
The game was released two years ago, and the official website still promises multiplayer “soon after release.” During this time, the studio has released one major DLC and is preparing a second—they simply didn’t have enough resources for multiplayer. But, as the developers assured, the project hasn’t been abandoned.
The community is already wondering how multiplayer will interact with mods, since almost everyone uses them on PC. However, GSC apparently has a solution, although they haven’t revealed any details. Fans are already sketching out plans: some are looking forward to a co-op mode for forays into the Zone, while others are dreaming of PvP arenas. The developers are keeping mum about the format, but work on the update continues—that’s the main thing.
The studio is currently busy with several other secret projects, so it looks like we’ll have to wait a while for an update. But the very fact that work is underway is encouraging.
