Ten years after its cancellation, a working build of DJ Hero 3, Activision’s unreleased DJ simulator trilogy, has leaked online. While it’s still unavailable for PC play, one of the rarest builds of the Xbox 360 era has been rescued from oblivion.

How a Rare Game Disc Found Its Way to Restorers?
Development began immediately after the release of the second game. FreeStyleGames quickly put together a vertical demo to gauge the direction of the series and demonstrate the project’s potential to the executives. The builds were burned onto regular DVD-R discs for internal testing on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii—and one of these discs accidentally survived.

In July 2026, the Games That Weren’t team was contacted by an anonymous owner of the disc.

By August, the image was removed and handed over to archivists at Hidden Palace.

What new features were the developers preparing for DJ Hero 3?
The developers tried to freshen up the familiar gameplay. They planned to add so-called “branching mixes”—branching tracks that would change their sound based on the player’s decisions.

Unfortunately, these experiments didn’t save the project. Publisher Activision was phasing out the entire Hero series, so the prototype was shelved.
Issues launching on emulators
Running the build directly through the Xenia emulator is currently not possible. Upon launch, the error “Failed to initialize Natal System” appears because the program can’t emulate Kinect.
However, the game runs on a real Xbox 360 devkit. Enthusiasts Aeritha/Glitchgod have already posted gameplay footage, and hackers are looking for a way to bypass the sensor check.
