German studio 314 Arts, currently struggling to pull its zombie action game Projekt Z: Beyond Order out of crisis, hadn’t planned to lead the announcement of a new project—but they did anyway. They call NightRunner “the next evolution of the horde survival and PvE extraction genre.” A PC release on Steam is scheduled for 2027, with the first public test scheduled for September.

So, NightRunner isn’t just another co-op shooter. It’s a blend of extraction, dungeon crawlers, and tower defense all rolled into one. The developers drew inspiration from Killing Floor, the Transit mode from Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, and Escape from Tarkov. The story unfolds in a post-apocalyptic world where sunlight has become deadly, and the only salvation is a railroad network with armored trains. Players—”Night Runners”—complete contracts, delivering resources between outposts.

The Train That Never Stops

The heart of NightRunner is expeditions on an armored train. At the start of each run, all players’ train cars are coupled into one massive train. You stop in contaminated zones, clear the area of mutants, collect resources for repairs, and then hit the road again. But if the mission fails, all the items you’ve found are lost.

Crucially, the train never stops. Even if your train car is destroyed, you retreat to the next one and continue your defense. The battlefield is constantly changing, forcing the team to adapt on the fly. The only signs of life in this grim world are your ability to stick together.

Four Roles – Four Survival Styles

The developers offer four Runner presets: Engineer, Stalker, Field Expert, and Termite. Each preset determines how you fight, search, and support your team. Between runs, you can manage and upgrade your gear. This system builds on classic roles, but with its own tempo and dynamics.

Four Modes – Four Levels of Madness

NightRunner will offer four modes:

  • Train Missions – the core experience: choosing a train car, clearing zones, and evacuating.
  • Transitional Missions – a nonstop voyage on a heavily armed ship through mutated waters.
  • Dungeons – linear levels with bosses and the most valuable loot.
  • Endless – a tribute to the classic Call of Duty zombie mode: waves, adaptation, and high scores.

Technical Details

The game is being developed in Unity and is partially funded by the German Film- und Medienstiftung NRW foundation. Full Russian localization and Steam Deck support are announced. Minimum requirements: Intel i7-4770K, 16 GB RAM, and GTX 1660. The Steam page is already open – you can add it to your wishlist and sign up for a playtest.

NightRunner is a vast experiment that attempts to cross hardcore extraction with dynamic train defense. Whether 314 Arts can achieve what so many have failed to achieve—only time will tell. For now, here’s the September test. The scary part is, it won’t be long now.
