Locked chests are a common sight in RPGs. More often than not, something useful awaits inside: a rare resource, decent loot, or a ton of gold. The key is to have a lockpick. Each game then twists the mechanics differently: some offer a simple minigame, others a skill test, and others a full-blown puzzle.

Gothic 1 Remake stands out in this regard. Its lockpicking system is one of the most brutal, especially at the start. Mistakes are practically unforgiving. The first lock can take 10-15 minutes, and that is no exaggeration. And when you run out of lockpicks, you start to get nervous. Let us explore how the mechanics work and where to replenish your supplies when things do not go according to plan.

Lock Mechanics in Gothic 1 Remake

Once you reach the Old Camp, run straight to the huts. Diggers and Brotherhood members store their personal belongings there, and sometimes you will find valuable loot. But the main thing is locked chests. If you already have a lockpick, interact with the chest, and the lockpicking interface will appear. Depending on the complexity of the lock, you will see five or six sliders. Each has a pin that moves in the direction you push the slider.

The goal is to align all the sliders so that each pin is perfectly centered. Ideally, the pin turns bronze—a signal that the position is correct. Think it is easy? In reality, it is the complete opposite.

The problem is that the sliders are not independent. You move one, and the others move. Sometimes in the same direction, sometimes in the opposite direction. Therefore, the first thing you need to do is figure out who is connected to whom. Only then can you try to pick the lock.

At the beginning of the game, the system is especially merciless. Exactly one mistake is allowed. A second one, and the lockpick breaks. You start over. My advice: save before each chest. No other options.

How to Level Up Your Lockpicking Skill?

As your lockpicking skill improves, the number of acceptable mistakes increases. The higher your skill level, the greater your chance of breaking a complex lock without leaving a lockpick inside the keyhole. However, there is a tricky part: a slider may appear isolated, but it is actually dependent on another one. You have placed the last pin in the center, then tried to turn the next one—and the first one will move again. So constantly monitor how the components interact.

The best tactic: work with the sliders one at a time. Slowly move each pin toward the center, watching the others react. If a pin hits the edge and will not move, switch to another slider and come back later.

Yes, the system is annoying. Especially when the chest inside is complete nonsense. But successfully opening a lock preserves the lockpick, meaning you can continue looting other chests without spending any extra money. So, level up your Lockpicking skills whenever possible—it will pay off handsomely.

Where to Find and Buy Master Keys in New Colony?

Lockpicks in Gothic 1 Remake are not lying around under every bush, but they are still possible to find. Search chests, hiding places, and various containers throughout the Colony. Stumbled into an abandoned camp? Take a minute to explore. Popped into another hut? Dig around in the corners. Supplies are often hidden there, including those coveted lockpicks.

The easiest way early on is to visit Fisk in the Old Camp. He is sitting by his house in the market square. He sells up to 12 lockpicks at a time. The price is 15 ore nuggets each. It is a bit pricey, but it is the most reliable source if you plan to open a few chests. By the way, you can save up ore or exchange it with other traders—by this point, you usually already have some in your stash.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Hacking Chests in the Game

Losing a dozen or so lockpicks on the very first chest in Minenthal is a classic sign of a newbie’s initiation. Before rushing to Fisk and wasting all your ore on new tools, it is worth understanding the physics of the process itself. Most failures occur for two reasons: players are simply in a hurry and do not notice that the sliders in the lock are tightly connected to each other.

If you act haphazardly, the pins will break one after another. To save your nerves and resources, master a simple sequence of actions.

Algorithm for Opening Locks Without Breaking

Lockpicking strategy steps

  • F5 is your best friend. You must save before each chest in Gothic 1 Remake. Without it, the gameplay will be a waste of scarce ore.
  • Study the interface. After activating the minigame, do not make any sudden movements for three or four seconds. Carefully inspect the starting position of all the elements.
  • Look for hidden connections. Select the slider on the left edge, smoothly slide it one notch toward the center, and then focus on the others. By noticing which pins move simultaneously, you will identify the linked pairs.
  • Start with single elements. Isolated pins that do not affect their neighbors should be set to the correct position first. After that, they can be forgotten.
  • Deal with complex pairs. Save interconnected sliders for the end. When aligning one, carefully pull the other, balancing between their positions, as they will constantly shift each other.
  • Hitting the right color. Once a pin turns bronze, its position is locked. This element should not be touched again.

The Impact of Thieving Skills on Lockpick Strength

Without the profile skill in Gothic 1 Remake, the price of any mistake is immediate breakage of the lockpick and a complete reset of all lockpicking progress. This is precisely why you might end up sitting next to a locked crate for a good 15 minutes at the start.

Training with a Master will solve this problem. The first level of Mastery can be obtained from Fingers in the Old Camp, which costs 10 LP and 100 ore. The investment pays for itself immediately, as the rules of the game change dramatically.

Skill Level Mistakes Before Lockpick Breaks Progress Reset on Break Lock Simplification
No Skill 1–2 mistakes — the tool breaks almost immediately Yes, all sliders reset from zero No
Trained
10 LP + 100 ore
Up to 4 mistakes No, progress is preserved No
Master
20 LP + 200 ore
Up to 6 mistakes No, progress is preserved Yes — the game removes one connection between pins

At the maximum “Master” level, the developers implemented an interesting mechanic: if the lockpick does break, one of the connections between the sliders is permanently removed from the lock structure. It turns out that each unsuccessful attempt physically simplifies the puzzle.

Where to Find a Thief Master in the Old Camp?

To direct the marker to the desired character, ask Diego about the masters — he will tell you which way to go. Fingers’ Hut is located near the Arena, slightly to the left of the castle’s main entrance. The landmark is as follows: pass by Snaph’s cooking cauldron and immediately turn right up the hill.

Important: the Thieves’ Guild does not accept strangers without reason. Fingers will refuse to teach you for money until you complete a task for him—steal a ring from Scatty.

The quest is useful in any case. This way, you will complete two tasks at once: unlock access to lockpicking training and guarantee yourself Fingers’ vote, which is necessary for official membership in the Old Camp.

Until you master the necessary skills, remember the main rule: if a pin is stuck against the edge and will not budge, stop pressing it. Switch to the adjacent elements—as soon as you move the desired slider next to it, the jammed pin will release itself.
