Scarlet Nexus was often put on a par with Code Vein, as it had a common publisher and a vibrant anime style. But in reality, this similarity is rapidly dissolving. The Bandai Namco project almost immediately avoids any comparisons and reveals itself as an independent, dynamic action game with its own character. His fantasy world, populated by bizarre life forms and imbued with psychokinetic abilities, sets a special mood. And from the very first minutes, the gameplay relies on speed, entertainment and tactical flexibility. It is the combat system — a mixture of close combat, character skills and active interaction with the environment — that becomes the main source of emotions and one of the key strengths of the game.

In general, Bandai Namco has firmly established itself in recent years as one of the key publishers of high-quality anime games. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot offered fans a nostalgic story adventure, Code Vein managed to captivate fans of complex soulslikes, and Scarlet Nexus continues this line, but in a different way. Before us is a JRPG, which, although not devoid of rough edges, impresses with a well-developed lore, charismatic characters and unexpectedly deep combat mechanics. The leveling system, the variability of skills and the emphasis on teamwork make the passage intense and emotional, while the visual style and music enhance the overall feeling of a living, constantly moving world.

The plot and narrative of Scarlet Nexus
The main risk of Scarlet Nexus lies in its launch: the game is quite capable of tiring in the first couple of hours of passage. The narrative is structured as if the authors tried to fit a full season of an anime series into the format of a single feature film. The plot is in a hurry, the characters appear one after the other, and there is not enough time to reveal the characters. As a result, the characters are bombarded with terms like “Spring of Extinction”, septentrions and mysterious red threads, while the player has not yet had time to figure out the basic rules of the world. Because of this, immersion in ENT is difficult: instead of emotional involvement, there is a feeling of information overload, which makes it difficult to experience the atmosphere of a fantastic universe.
Gradually, however, the story begins to take shape and make sense. The action takes place in the distant future, where scientists have discovered a special hormone in the human brain that opens access to supernatural abilities. This is how psionics appeared — people with psychokinetic powers who were recruited to serve in the OPI special forces. Their main task is to contain the onslaught of Other, creepy mutants of extraterrestrial origin, threatening the remnants of civilization. To preserve the combat capability of elite soldiers, humanity has learned to slow down aging, so the appearance of the heroes contrasts with the grim reality of what is happening. This sci-fi foundation is gradually being revealed and makes the plot more coherent and logical.

Even before the passage begins, the player is offered to choose one of the two protagonists — Yuito or Kasane, and this choice is much more important than it might seem. The main story is presented from different points of view, allowing you to look at key events from a different angle. The characters have different personalities, backgrounds, and motivations, and their storylines raise unique themes and conflicts for each. The gameplay is also different: Yuito is focused on close combat with a sword, while Kasane prefers distance and quick attacks with blades. They share a common ability — telekinesis, which becomes the basis of the combat system and adds tactical depth to battles.
When the story finally gets going, the Scarlet Nexus is capable of truly captivating. The story stops stomping around, the characters open up deeper, and the dialogues sound more lively and meaningful — as if the scriptwriters finally trust the player and don’t try to explain the same thing in a circle. Emotional attachment to the characters is growing, and unexpected plot twists regularly give rise to reasons to continue the passage. The only thing that spoils the impression is the production of cut scenes: most of the videos are static images with talking characters. This format does not convey the dynamics of events well and reduces the effect of key moments, although you get used to it over time. Despite these flaws, the overall impression of the narrative remains positive and gradually overlaps with the unsuccessful introduction.
Scarlet Nexus gameplay and combat system
But in terms of gameplay, Scarlet Nexus practically does not give a break. Between the plot episodes, the characters move through the locations, consistently moving towards the next goal. The levels are extremely linear — this is a typical approach for a medium-budget JRPG, familiar from the Tales of series. The main route leads straight ahead, and rare branches offer either an additional battle or useful loot like first-aid kits and resources. There is no in-depth research here, but the game takes a different approach: the visual style stands out due to futuristic details. Holographic signage, road signs and environmental elements create the effect of drawn contours, forming an unusual atmosphere of cyberpunk aesthetics.
Once you engage in battle with Others, the action instantly gains momentum. Telekinesis is not just a spectacular ability here, but the basis of combat mechanics. At any moment, you can activate the skill and throw everything that is badly lying at the enemy: cars, fences, dumpsters and debris from the environment. However, relying on superpowers indefinitely will not work — the scale of psi energy is quickly depleted and restored only by blows with weapons. The best battle rhythm is based on alternating between normal attacks and special techniques, which allows you to maintain the pace of the battle and not fall out of the dynamics.

As you progress, the arsenal of techniques expands. Special objects appear that are lifted by a separate button and require more time to prepare. If the enemy does not lose concentration at this moment, you will get a small QTE and an impressive result: crushing damage and a noticeable decrease in the “crushing scale” of the enemy — the local equivalent of endurance. Statues, barrels of water and other interactive elements of the environment are used. When the scale is completely empty, the game offers a spectacular finish with a short cut scene that highlights the entertainment of each victory.
Gradually, Scarlet Nexus reveals the key elements of its combat system, which form its unique pace:
-
active use of telekinesis and environmental objects;
-
Combining normal attacks and psychokinetic skills;
-
interacting with your teammates and borrowing their abilities;
-
a system of “crushing” with spectacular finishes;
-
temporary gains like acceleration of the brain and release of the thought field.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg. As the hero levels up and nodes in the vast skill tree are opened, the combat system becomes deeper and more variable. Teammates are always there and ready to share their abilities. By combining skills, you can create tactical bundles: pour water over the enemy and immediately activate an electric discharge, slow down time against especially agile Others, or arrange combos with allies. The companions literally integrate into the battle, changing the player for a split second and adding an additional effect to the attack.
The variety of techniques is pleasantly surprising. Dodging, intercepting objects flying at you, throwing enemies into the air and aerial combinations — all this is organically woven into the controls and does not require memorizing complex schemes. It is especially interesting to experiment with unique objects in the environment: some explode, others launch trains on rails with tremendous damage, and some allow you to literally fly around the location. Over time, powerful enhancement modes open up — “brain acceleration”, which temporarily increases performance, and “thought field release”, which transfers the hero to a distorted version of the level with endless telekinesis. At such moments, every fight turns into a real attraction.
Special attention should be paid to the development of relationships with partners. To make your allies more effective, you need to strengthen your ties with them — visit their hideout, communicate, and participate in side scenes between missions. These episodes, made in the spirit of Persona, reveal the characters’ personalities and add emotional depth. Gifts that can be used to decorate the base gradually turn an empty room into a cozy space. But the main thing is that all this directly affects the gameplay: The abilities of the companions are enhanced, their activation time increases, and the available combos become noticeably more. Thus, the social mechanics here do not work for show, but become part of the overall combat system.
Scarlet Nexus Final Impressions: Strengths and Weaknesses
The first impression of the Scarlet Nexus, alas, turns out to be deceptive. The game has a rough start: the introduction is too long in plot, and the gameplay at first does not demonstrate even half of its potential. Until new combat mechanics start to be discovered, the battles look pretty monotonous and don’t cause a wow effect. However, as you progress, the situation changes dramatically. The story gradually picks up pace, the ENT of the universe becomes clearer, and battles with Others turn into a dynamic and tactically intense spectacle. At some point, you catch yourself thinking that the decision not to quit the game was the right one — the Scarlet Nexus opens slowly but surely.

As a result, the project feels like a bold and generally successful anime experiment from Bandai Namco. The developers were not afraid to play with the form of the narrative, the combat system and the visual style, even if they were not always able to bring the ideas to the ideal. Nevertheless, the game leaves a pleasant aftertaste and gives hope that the publisher will continue to develop such action JRPGs in the future, making them more complete and verified in terms of staging and optimization.
