On April 11, a temporary but very ambitious “Climbing” mode appeared in the snow-capped Isonzo mountains. This is a real challenge for those who are ready to measure their determination by the steepness of the slopes of Marmolada, a peak where a combination of tactical skill and bravery becomes the decisive factor for victory.
The authors admit that they were inspired by the real exploits of climbers and soldiers committed during the battles in the highlands. Some of these stories have been preserved in archives, others have been lost in time, but their spirit can be felt in every meter of vertical testing.
At the very top of Marmolada, the Austro-Hungarians built a fortified command post of wooden huts. The Italians’ task at first sounds simple — to capture this position. But the essence of the regime is not in the peak itself, but in the path to it. It is the ascent and the search for routes that become the heart of the “Ascent”.
The Italians have no detours or tricky maneuvers — the only way up is through almost sheer stone walls. The game offers a simple but intuitive climbing mechanic: it is enough to approach a suitable surface, and a hint about the possibility of climbing will appear on the screen. After activation, the mode turns into a vertical analog of the usual movement, where “forward” is up, “backward” is down, and side steps become short jumps along the cliff. Sometimes such offset jumps are the only way to avoid a dangerous ledge or to bypass an enemy patrol unnoticed.

It is extremely important to stay out of sight: the defenders, the Austro-Hungarian troops, continuously pour fire on the slopes and even throw stones down. No one marks the routes — players have to study the terrain on their own, look for cracks, protrusions and safe niches. Each new ascent resembles a mini-expedition, where a decision made in a second separates life from falling into the abyss.
Moving from ledge to ledge, the Italians destroy enemy spawn points and establish their own. The final stage of the regime is securing a ridge with control points and storming the command center. This is the culmination of the entire operation, where the battle unfolds at the limit of strength and capabilities.
One of the key innovations was the system of pythons, metal hooks that soldiers can hammer into the rock, creating safe areas for those who climb next. Although in reality pythons were used more for descent during the First World War, in Isonzo they turn into the most important offensive tool. If you install several hooks side by side, they will be connected by ropes, accelerating the movement of the partners along the vertical plane.
However, there is a risk here too: a straight rope route can become a trap if the defenders control this area. The speed of movement will not save you from a bullet, and choosing a place to install pythons turns into another element of tactical planning.
The Austro-Hungarians, who hold the height, also received their own unique means of protection. In addition to the usual weapons, they can use stones as physical objects. You need to control such an improvised projectile no less skillfully than with a rifle: a stone bounces off a cliff, changes its trajectory, and in order to hit a climber, you have to take into account the angle of the throw and the force. This allows defenders to stay away from the edge without being exposed to the risk of fire from below, and at the same time attack the attackers.
