The Story of Aatrox
Long before he became a name feared in the top lane, Aatrox held a very different role. He and his kin once stood between Shurima and the encroaching Void, trusted with power large enough to turn the tide of that fight. That trust did not last: the same beings entrusted with defending the empire grew into a menace it could no longer tolerate, and mortals had to rely on cunning magic rather than force of arms to put them down. The punishment was imprisonment within enchanted blades, meant to hold for good.
It did not hold. Aatrox was the first of his brethren to break loose, and his freedom carried a price paid by others. Whoever picked up the weapon that once contained him was reshaped by it, their body claimed as a new shell for his return. What now moves across Runeterra is a rough copy of his original form, stitched together from flesh that was never his, chasing a reckoning that has waited centuries. Deathbringer Stance lets each empowered strike tear health away to fuel him, while World Ender pushes him into something close to his true demonic shape, feeding on kills to stay in that form longer.
The Darkin Blade he swings as his signature attack is a memory of the very weapon that held him prisoner, now used to open old wounds three strikes at a time. Infernal Chains and Umbral Dash exist to close distance on whatever target has drawn his fury, since nothing in his path matters as much as the vengeance he was owed. He answers to no single nation, fitting neatly into the wider Runeterra setting, described as ground shared by wanderers and ancient beings loyal to no one place. The same catalog holds an entry for Kindred, another figure whose age and purpose place it outside any ordinary homeland.
