League of Legends is gearing up for a return to the past—Riot Games has officially announced the classic version of its flagship MOBA. Called League of Legends Classic, the project will offer players a retro experience with access to early builds, including beta versions. This decision is clearly inspired by the success of World of Warcraft Classic, which once recaptured Blizzard’s lapsed audience.
The game is already 17 years old, and its age is showing. Despite a temporary surge in interest after Arcane and a series of spin-offs, online LoL continues to decline. The statistics are relentless—old players are leaving, and new ones are joining at a slower pace. This situation is typical for long-running online services, but Riot has decided to take an unconventional approach. Instead of another major patch or mechanics change, it’s embracing nostalgia.

What does League of Legends Classic offer?
The premise is simple: you get access to the very same LoL as it was at launch. The same champions, the same balance factors, no newfangled items or reworked abilities. For veterans, this is a chance to reminisce about their youth, and for newcomers, to understand where it all began. Incidentally, fans have repeatedly requested this exact mode, and it seems they’ve been heard.
Why did Riot take this step?
Clearly, the developers see Classic as a way to retain the old guard and also attract those tired of modern overload. WoW Classic showed that a retro release can become a standalone hit, even if the main game continues to live its own life. Riot apparently has similar expectations, but without a precise release date, it’s too early to make predictions. The announcement has been made, the trailer is already online, but the launch date remains to be seen.
What’s next? Will it be a separate client or a mode within the main game? Details are scarce so far, but the announcement itself has already stirred up the community. Personally, I think this is a bold move—and perhaps just what LoL needs to breathe new life into it.
