The showdown between Rockstar Games and 31 dismissed employees from British studios has already become a matter of politics. After weeks of protests, lawsuits, and discontent within the company, it all reached parliament. The situation, already well-known in the gaming industry, became even more serious when Liberal Democrat MP Christine Jardine appealed to ministers, asking the government to help those who were dismissed. Now this conflict, which began in the developer offices in Edinburgh and other cities, is being discussed throughout the country, because those who are fired want to return to work and finish GTA 6.

Parliamentary attention to mass dismissals of developers

Jardine raised the issue of Rockstar North employees who were suddenly fired in parliament. She says people feel they were kicked out for trying to form a trade union and discussing working conditions among themselves.

Rockstar says that the dismissals were due to a serious violation of discipline, namely, the disclosure of classified information.

It is still difficult to understand what is true here. Jardine wants the ministers to talk and decide how the government can help those who have been dismissed or sort out the problem with these dismissals.

Demands to be reinstated were voiced in Parliament

Jardine spoke in parliament, briefly describing the demands of employees:

This Rockstar, the creator of video games, fired at least 30 people from British studios, including Rockstar North in Edinburgh. My constituents have suffered, and some of them complained to me last week. They say they were kicked out for trying to form a trade union and for talking about working conditions among themselves. Rockstar claims that they divulged secrets and were fired for serious violations,” explained Christine Jardine.

She said that she had requested information from the company and wanted to meet with the minister. The issue is still being resolved, and the ministers have not yet said what they will do.

Protests against Rockstar’s layoffs are gaining momentum

In short, because of Jardine’s statements in parliament, all this Rockstar stuff got out, and the grating started there. More than two hundred Rockstar North employees sent a letter to their bosses, demanding that those who were fired be returned. They believe that the dismissals were revenge for the fact that the team tried to organize a trade union with the support of the IWGB. This union has already sued Rockstar, claiming that the company interferes with the work of the union and illegally harasses people after layoffs.

Rockstar employees are being asked to reinstate their workers.

An aura of fear and uncertainty among employees

Former employees, whose names are not being named out of fear, talk about the eerie environment and misunderstandings.:

There’s such an atmosphere of intimidation at Rockstar right now. But my brave colleagues went straight to their superiors to be heard, and did not give up. Everyone who knows understands: It’s just a brazen way to break up a trade union.

IWGB organizer Fred Carter later expanded on these criticisms, placing them in a broader scheme that drew public attention to the studio’s internal culture.:

“By deciding to fire more than 30 union members, Rockstar has committed an unprecedented Amazon-style act of union destruction for the gaming industry. This is a company that receives more than 440 million pounds in tax benefits in the UK, while demonstrating a callous and blatant disregard for both the livelihood of employees and the letter of the law.” – Fred Carter.

Protests, mass layoffs: street demonstrations continue

Protests have taken place in London and Edinburgh, and several more actions are planned this month in these cities and in Paris. The reaction of employees, from internal letters to street demonstrations, indicates an active desire to challenge Rockstar’s version of events and draw public attention to this dispute. The dismissed employees demand to complete work on the GTA project and insist on reinstating Rockstar employees in their positions.

GTA 6 development in question: completion of work on the game has been postponed

The company’s having a rough time. Rockstar just pushed back the Grand Theft Auto 6 release from May to November next year, which grabbed all the headlines. Take-Two, the publisher, said the delay is because the team needs more time to make the game as good as it should be. They said they’re backing Rockstar and are sure the game will be great.

The connection between layoffs and the postponement of GTA VI

On November 7, journalist and insider Jason Schreier denied information about the impact of Rockstar Games’ layoffs on the postponement of Grand Theft Auto VI from May to November 2026. So, some workers who want their jobs back are saying that firing those lead developers could mess up the GTA 6 launch.

The new GTA VI should be out on November 19, 2026. The team said they’re sorry it’s taking so long, but they need the extra time to squash some bugs and polish things up before the game is ready.

The scale of the future game

The plot of the action will take place in the fictional state of Leonid, an analogue of Florida, USA. The next map is gonna be huge, like twice the size of GTA V. It’ll have 3 big cities and 4 smaller towns. From what I hear, making GTA 6 is pretty stressful right now because everyone’s protesting the firings.

About those layoffs at Rockstar Games, things are still changing. The people who got fired want a chance to finish working on GTA 6, since it’s supposed to be one of the biggest games ever. The government is looking into the layoffs, and people are wondering about what it’s like to actually work there. So, this whole thing probably isn’t over yet.
