Todd Howard confirmed: The Elder Scrolls 6 is being developed using Creation Engine 3, a new version of Bethesda’s proprietary engine. The studio’s head gave the team an “A+” for their work on the technology. Unlike Starfield, which used CE2, The Elder Scrolls 6 will feature a completely redesigned architecture. The update addresses the game’s core technologies: developer tools have been redesigned, world simulation systems have been improved, and loading logic has been changed. The release, according to insiders, is tentatively scheduled for 2028–2029.

Creation Engine 3: Differences and New Engine Technologies
The difference between CE2 and CE3 isn’t cosmetic. The new rendering is the key differentiator. CE2 Starfield offered real-time global illumination. CE3 goes further: full-frame ray tracing and hardware path tracing for calculating direct lighting, complex reflections, and global occlusion.
Engineers redesigned the rendering subsystem from the ground up, focusing on processing high-polygon objects and reducing CPU load. A new geometry and data management system is another innovation. CE3 features improved physics modules and algorithms for constructing complex materials, while the particle system and fluid simulation now interact with environment geometry.
Animations of hair, clothing, and character facial expressions are processed in parallel with frame rendering. Memory optimizations allowed animation calculations to be moved directly into the graphics pipeline. As a result, CE3 expands the visualization capabilities of dense urban scenes and complex landscapes while maintaining the tracking of thousands of interactive objects.
The Impact of Microsoft Layoffs on the Development of TES 6
In July 2026, Microsoft announced a restructuring: four studios were closed, and approximately 1,600 employees were laid off at Xbox, Bethesda, and Activision Blizzard. The latest round of layoffs was preceded by IGN reports: Bethesda had lost more than 50 employees working on TES 6, including veterans from the Morrowind era. Anonymous developers spoke of shattered morale, the risk of crunch, and the replacement of experienced staff with contract workers.
However, Bethesda officially stated: “The work schedule remains unchanged.” Development of TES 6 is on track, and the layoffs have not affected the deadline. The discrepancy between IGN’s reports and the official position is classic information noise. The studio confirmed that the team is testing playable builds daily and is pleased with the progress.
Modding in TES 6 and the capabilities of Creation Engine 3
Modding is fundamental to Bethesda games. Howard recalled: the Construction Set was shipped with Morrowind on a separate disc. CE3 guarantees modding from day one. This is an advantage over Unreal Engine 5: an external engine would have required adapting the tools.
Bethesda is developing the Creations ecosystem: verified creators receive income. $10 million has already been paid out through the Creation Club. Modding has become a career: a hobby is turning into a profession. CE3 will give creators a universal toolset, allowing different departments to work simultaneously on different franchises. TES 6 will receive community support that surpasses anything seen before.
