Rumors about the return of one of DC’s darkest universes have been circulating for months—and now they’re taking shape. NetherRealm Studios, the team that brought us modern Mortal Kombat, is reportedly developing Injustice 3.

It’s been almost ten years since the release of Injustice 2 (2017—seriously, a whole era ago). Back then, the studio went into “mortal combat,” leaving DC fans hoping for a sequel. And now, it seems, we’ve finally arrived.

For those unfamiliar: Injustice isn’t just a fighting game. It’s an alternate universe where the Joker tricks Superman into killing Lois Lane and their unborn child. Afterward, Kal-El becomes a tyrant. And the classic Justice League blasts through an inter-reality portal to stop him. Gritty, dramatic, and well-written—just the way NetherRealm loves it. The story has already been adapted into comics and an animated film. But the game is a different matter. According to a new report, a third installment is in the works. The intrigue is fueled by the voice actors (Superman, Aquaman)—at public events, they’ve hinted that “something is brewing.”

So, we’re waiting for an official announcement. In the meantime, keep your fingers crossed for the return of the “God vs. God” mode.

Warner Bros. data leak reveals details of Injustice 3

A new report from MP1st adds fuel to the fire. The source is the resume of an anonymous artist working at Warner Bros. Games. The identity has been concealed (understandably, for confidentiality), but his projects include a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy and two other unannounced titles. And also, Injustice 3 itself.

And this isn’t the first hint. James Gunn, head of DC Studios, previously admitted that talks with NetherRealm and other studios about future DC games are ongoing. So, the rumors are gaining ground.

Now, let’s look at the timeline. Back in 2021, the team had already decided on the next project—at that time, Ed Boon (co-founder of NetherRealm and the father of Mortal Kombat) was widely interpreted as a teaser. In 2022, he explicitly stated: he wants to return to the series. And in November of that year, he tweeted: the next one would be either a new Injustice or Mortal Kombat 12.

They chose the latter. Thus, Mortal Kombat 1 entered the gaming world—a reboot after MK11, set for release in 2023.

Almost three years have passed since then. Enough time for NetherRealm and Warner Bros. to be actively developing the next Injustice. At least in theory. Time will tell.
