Laufey’s announcement of God of War at State of Play in June raised several questions in the community. The most common one was the release date (spoiler: there’s no release date yet). But immediately after that came another: what will you actually play it on?
So, first things first.
Santa Monica Studio showed a twenty-minute gameplay snippet at State of Play in early June. After her death, Faye—Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother—travels to Everywhen, an afterlife where gods from different mythologies vie for power. It’s not a resort-like setting: the heroine almost immediately encounters the Egyptian Sekhmet and the Mongol Begtse. The combat system, judging by the trailer, is noticeably faster than in Ragnarök: it emphasizes acrobatics and aggression over stamina and blocking.
Sony didn’t announce an official release date. At the end of the demo, they simply announced “Coming Soon to PlayStation 5.” But the lack of a date has sparked a flurry of rumors, and now the main insider of this series, NateTheHate, appears.

God of War Release Date Insiders and Rumors Laufey
Back in March 2026, he accurately predicted that the new God of War would focus on Faye and feature more dynamic gameplay. Now NateTheHate claims that the last release window he heard about was the first half of 2027. With the caveat that the plans could have been adjusted. This version was supported by another reputable insider, Jason Schreier of Bloomberg: he categorically denied rumors of a delay as far as 2028. It seems plausible, especially since Sony already has Until Dawn 2 scheduled for 2027—two major exclusives in one year is quite in keeping with the company’s style.
Analyst Predictions and Fan Theories about the Game’s Release
Fans, however, have been speculating on earlier theories as well. Some were hoping for late 2026, but most analysts agree that a major PS5 exclusive needs time to polish. So the first half of 2027 sounds like a reasonable compromise.
Will God of War: Laufey be released on PC and PlayStation 5?
This is where things get interesting. The previous two installments—God of War 2018 and Ragnarök—eventually made it to PC. It took a couple of years, with mediocre ports, but they did. It’s logical to expect the same from Laufey, right?
Not at all.
Sony changed its single-player action game release strategy in early 2026. The company is returning to a model of full-fledged console exclusives—whether temporarily or permanently remains unclear, but the fact remains: new major games from internal studios won’t be released on PC at launch. God of War: Laufey is the first sign of this new policy.
Jason Schreier confirmed: don’t expect the game on PC, at least not in the foreseeable future. Yes, there hasn’t been an official statement from Sony yet, but they don’t usually announce things like this in advance. They just don’t release the port. For years.
Of course, the strategy could change again if the PS5 versions underperform. But counting on that now is like planning for the weather three seasons from now. It’s possible, but pointless.
Official platforms for the new God of War
Who is this game for? Exclusively for PS5 owners. Any other platform will be available only if Sony changes its mind. Which is unlikely in the current climate.
And don’t say you weren’t warned.
