AION 2 is coming to Steam as a free-to-play PC MMORPG on October 5, with founder access beginning September 30. NCSoft’s sequel returns to a world shaped by two rival factions, but rebuilds it in Unreal Engine 5 with unrestricted flight, aerial combat, extensive character creation and more than two hundred dungeons spread across several group sizes.

Flight is part of combat, not just transportation

AION’s wings have always given the series an immediate visual identity. AION 2 expands that idea by allowing players to fight in the air as well as use flight to cross the world. Vertical movement changes how a route is read: an enemy above a cliff, an objective below a bridge and a safe landing area can all matter in the same encounter.

The system will be judged by control and clarity. Free movement is exciting only when players can track targets, judge distance and understand when they are vulnerable. Steam players using a controller or a mouse and keyboard should test camera sensitivity early, because comfortable aerial control will influence exploration as much as combat.

The world is built for two competing factions

The sequel restores the conflict between the Elyos and Asmodians. Choosing a side affects identity, social groups and large-scale competition rather than serving as a cosmetic selection. The world is described as far larger than the original game’s map, so travel and faction territory need to create meaningful differences instead of simply adding distance.

Open areas support both PvE and PvP activity. A player interested mainly in quests and dungeons will still share the wider setting with faction ambitions, while competitive groups can organize around territory and encounters. Understanding how optional and mandatory those points of contact are will be important during the first week.

More than two hundred dungeons cover several group sizes

NCSoft lists over two hundred dungeons, including solo challenges, five-player content and ten-player encounters. That range gives progression more than one route. A player can learn a class alone, move into a regular party and later attempt content that requires stricter coordination without waiting for one specific activity to become available.

Quantity alone will not determine the quality of the endgame. Distinct mechanics, readable boss attacks and worthwhile rewards are what keep a dungeon relevant after the first clear. The large number is promising because it can support variety, but the opening weeks will reveal how many encounters remain useful across different stages of equipment progression.

Steam access Date and purpose
Founder access Begins September 30 for eligible founder editions
Regular launch Free-to-play access opens October 5
Solo dungeons Designed for individual progression and class practice
Five-player dungeons Standard coordinated group content
Ten-player encounters Larger activities with greater coordination demands

Access options are easy to separate

The regular Steam launch is free and does not require a founder pack. Paid founder editions mainly matter to players who want to enter on September 30 or value their included bonuses. Anyone who prefers to see server stability, class balance and early community feedback can wait for October 5 without buying access to the base game.

A large combat encounter in AION 2

Character creation supports a personal identity

The creator offers more than two hundred customization choices. Detailed faces, body settings and colors matter in an MMO because the same character may appear in cutscenes, social spaces and group content for hundreds of hours. A broad toolset also helps guilds avoid looking like minor variations of one default model.

Visual freedom works best when armor remains readable in motion. AION 2 has to balance elaborate costumes with the need to identify allies, enemies and attack effects during a crowded encounter. Players should create a character they recognize at a glance, not only one that looks impressive in a static close-up.

Class choice should begin with movement and role

A new player may be tempted to choose entirely by appearance, but movement, attack range and expected group role will have a larger effect on daily play. A class that feels natural while flying and repositioning can be more satisfying than one whose damage pattern looks stronger on paper. Early solo content is the right place to test that relationship.

Group players should also consider how much responsibility they want in a five-person dungeon. Healing, protection and control roles can find groups quickly, but they demand attention to other players. Damage roles offer a more direct start, although learning positioning and boss cues remains essential when the group reaches harder encounters.

Steam makes the launch easy to inspect

The store page lists Russian interface text and subtitles, which should make the many menus, skill descriptions and quest instructions easier to follow. PC-only launch support also means the controls and presentation can be judged around one hardware family instead of being divided across console versions.

The sensible approach is to treat founder access as an optional head start, not a requirement. AION 2’s important questions concern flight, dungeon variety, combat response and the long-term relationship between its factions.

All of those can be evaluated after the free Steam release, when the world is populated and the full progression loop is visible.
