The Lifeforms team has announced ETRE, a third-person Metroidvania set in the sci-fi comics of the 1970s and 80s. The game will officially launch on PC via Steam, but the developers are keeping the exact release date under wraps.

What’s in store for the sci-fi action game ETRE?

The protagonist, Xile, ventures into the depths of Orbis, a gigantic alien intelligence poised to fully awaken. The protagonist is driven by more than just scientific curiosity: he is searching for his missing lover, Athel. Within this living planetary organism, the post-human civilization of Etre thrives, torn apart by factional conflicts. Leaders Mal and Vale pursue opposing goals, and it’s up to the player to restore balance.

The world is built according to the principles of classic Metroidvania:

  • Exploring biomes. As the player progresses, they acquire new abilities that open passages to past locations.
  • Environment scanning. Players are free to explore alien structures, animated biomechanics, and ancient Angel Technology.
  • Flexible combat. You’ll need to seize the initiative in battles with Living Geometry and Pattern Creatures that utilize the landscape.

Plot forks and the fate of Orbis

Each of Xile’s choices shifts the balance of power within the ecosystem. Orbis can transform into a harmonious biome, become an all-powerful deity, or be reborn as a nightmarish abyssal entity. The story unfolds through the search for traces of Athel, while the internal divisions of Etre society race to control the growing intelligence.

The project clearly appeals to fans of unconventional game design: the retro-sci-fi visual style and the vast labyrinth of alien intelligence set the title apart from the usual genre. You can add ETRE to your Steam wishlist now.
