Call of Duty beta tests usually offer a handful of maps and familiar modes, but this time Infinity Ward has decided to put several much riskier ideas to the test. Players have gained access not only to multiplayer but also to part of the story campaign, while the biggest experiment is Kill Block, an arena capable of changing its routes and combat positions between rounds.

Early access to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta is already underway. The first phase runs until August 25 and is available to players who pre-ordered the game or received an invitation. The free open beta will take place from August 28 to September 1 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

What Is Included in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Beta?

The amount of available content is noticeably larger than usual. In addition to standard team-based matches, participants can complete a movement course, test the new class system, and earn rewards by increasing their player level.

The main surprise is Entrenched, a mission taken from the story campaign. Call of Duty has never previously allowed players to complete a full campaign episode during a public beta. Infinity Ward can now collect feedback not only on weapon balance, but also on mission pacing, enemy AI, and cinematic presentation.

The beta includes:

  • the Entrenched campaign mission;
  • Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Hardpoint;
  • Kill Confirmed and Search and Destroy;
  • the new Inflation mode;
  • 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight;
  • the modular Kill Block arena;
  • the Mobility Course training area;
  • five standard 6v6 maps during the first beta phase.

Content is being introduced gradually, so some maps and playlists may not be available immediately after launching the beta client.

How Does Inflation Mode Work in Modern Warfare 4?

Inflation changes the value of every elimination. A defeated opponent drops a cash reward that must be collected and protected. The money contributes to the team’s overall score, but players lose part of their accumulated fortune whenever they are eliminated.

As a result, the richest player on the battlefield quickly becomes an especially valuable target. Simply earning a large number of kills is not enough, as the collected money must also be protected until the match ends.

Mode Element How It Works What Players Should Consider
Enemy elimination Drops a cash reward The money must be collected
Accumulating money Increases the team’s score A wealthy player becomes a priority target
Being eliminated Removes part of the collected money A risky attack can cost the team its advantage
Victory condition Finish the match with more money Kills, survival, and teamwork are equally important

In practice, Inflation should encourage players to switch roles during a match. A teammate carrying a large amount of money can fall back while the rest of the squad provides protection or distracts the opposing team. Aggressive solo pushes may generate quick profits, but one failed attack can completely change the balance of the match.

Why Kill Block Cannot Be Learned Like a Regular Map

Kill Block is constructed from three connected modules: one central section and two outer blocks. Every two rounds, the system assembles a new combination while also giving both teams the same randomized weapon loadout.

Infinity Ward has prepared more than 500 possible arena configurations. Some sections contain elements inspired by Crash, Highrise, and Shoot House, but familiar landmarks can appear in completely different surroundings. Cover positions, sightlines, flanking routes, and even weather conditions can change alongside the modular blocks.

Kill Block is not procedural generation in the strictest sense. The system does not create new geometry from scratch, but instead combines modules designed in advance. The effect is similar from the player’s perspective: learning one set of angles and repeating the same strategy in every match will not work.

How to Win Matches on Kill Block

During the opening rounds, understanding the current configuration is more useful than blindly rushing toward a familiar position. Once the arena changes, previously reliable routes may no longer be relevant.

Several basic tips can improve your chances:

  • check the new sightlines before beginning an attack;
  • move with a teammate so you can trade eliminations;
  • do not rely on a single weapon category;
  • memorize individual modules instead of the entire map;
  • remember that an Overtime Flag appears when the round timer expires.

Identical randomized loadouts place both teams on equal footing. Victory does not go to the player who has already assembled the perfect meta class, but to the squad that understands the new layout and adapts to the available weapons faster.

How to Get Access to the Modern Warfare 4 Open Beta

Until August 25, guaranteed early access is available to players who pre-ordered the game. Those who purchased a digital edition through their platform’s official store usually do not need a separate code, as the beta is added to their library automatically.

The open phase begins on August 28. It will be free to play and will not require a pre-order or special invitation. Preloading is scheduled to begin on August 26.

The content lineup will expand during the second weekend. Players will gain access to Ground War, Hijack mode, the Lithium map, and a Warzone Resurgence test on the new Zodiac location. The maximum player level will also increase to 30, unlocking additional beta rewards.

What the Unusual MW4 Beta Tells Us About the Full Game

Modern Warfare 4 is attempting to solve a long-standing problem faced by annual Call of Duty releases: familiar gunplay is no longer always enough to justify buying another installment. Inflation introduces risk management, Kill Block disrupts the habit of mechanically memorizing maps, and the Entrenched mission offers an early opportunity to evaluate the single-player campaign.

The main question is whether these ideas will remain interesting after dozens of hours. Hundreds of Kill Block combinations sound impressive, but meaningful variety will depend not on the number of possible layouts, but on how significantly those changes affect actual tactics.

That is why this beta is more important than a conventional promotional demo. Before the full release on October 23, players can test three major parts of Modern Warfare 4: the campaign, traditional multiplayer, and its experimental modes. Infinity Ward, meanwhile, will receive an early answer to a much bigger question — whether the Call of Duty audience is ready to abandon perfectly memorized routes in favor of constant improvisation.
