Infinity Ward and Activision have officially confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will release on October 23, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. This is the first title in the series in recent years to receive a native version for a hybrid console from launch—the first time Call of Duty has returned to Nintendo platforms since Ghosts in 2013. The release will take place simultaneously on all target platforms, with no delays or postponements. However, the game will not be released on previous-generation consoles: PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will be unsupported.
The campaign takes place on the Korean Peninsula, where North Korea launches a full-scale invasion that threatens to destabilize the entire world. Players will assume the role of Private Park, a young South Korean soldier experiencing real combat for the first time. Meanwhile, Captain Price wages his own shadow war, operating outside the system and pursuing personal goals. Campaign locations span trench battles in Korea, shootouts in New York, chases in Paris, nighttime SAS raids in Mumbai, and urban assaults.

Ballistic Authority System and New Gunplay in MW4
The main innovation in Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer is the Ballistic Authority system. Infinity Ward describes it as a “weapons-focused technology stack” that integrates aiming precision, physical controls, realistic sound propagation, improved visibility, and a more intelligent battlefield perception. Bullet trajectory, weapon movement, operator stance, camera, audio, field of view, and target visibility—all these elements now work together in a single, highly accurate system.
The developers’ key promise is simple: “No spread, no guesswork, and no doubt. Every shot tells the truth.” Hip fire has become more direct and predictable—spread has been completely eliminated, making shots more closely tied to where the weapon is pointed, ensuring consistent, predictable, and fair gunplay. The entire system is built around weapons, not abstract gameplay conventions. This makes firefights more tactical, where precision and proper weapon control win out over chance. Infinity Ward has not released a game since 2022’s Modern Warfare 2—it took the studio four years to perfect this mechanic.
Kill Block Dynamic Map and Multiplayer Modes
One of the most intriguing new features in multiplayer is Kill Block. This is the first dynamic map in Call of Duty history: its configuration changes from match to match. Kill Block is based on a modular system: the arena is assembled from three separate sections—two side sections (“End Slabs”) and one central section (“Central Slab”). Before each match, these elements are randomly swapped, creating a new battlefield configuration and forcing players to adapt to the unfamiliar environment.
At launch, Kill Block will offer over 500 different modular map combinations. Available modules include both completely new locations and parts of classic series maps, including Crash, Shoot House, Storage Town, Killhouse, and Ambush. Some sections will also feature dynamic weather effects: rain and snow will reduce visibility, and water or ice may appear on weapons. The maps will feature destructible doors, vertical routes, and interactive environmental elements. At launch, the mode will support two formats: the classic 3v3 Gunfight and the brand-new 10v10 Gunfight. Players will receive random weapon loadouts, and after every two rounds, the map will automatically reconfigure itself, simultaneously rotating available loadouts. The winner is the first team to win six rounds. According to Activision, the modular map technology is designed for more than just Gunfight; after the game’s release, the developers plan to use Kill Block in other multiplayer modes.
The first public demonstration of Kill Block took place at Fanatics Fest in New York City, where attendees had the opportunity to try the mode out. At the same event, the Aston Martin Dreadnought, a tactical SUV co-developed with Aston Martin and appearing in DMZ and Warzone, was unveiled.
Call of Duty NEXT 2026 Presentation and Game Announcements

The annual Call of Duty NEXT event will take place on August 21, 2026. During the livestream, the developers will showcase live gameplay of Modern Warfare 4, detail the multiplayer content, hold discussions with the Infinity Ward team, and make additional announcements. In previous years, NEXT showcased key innovations, including the omnimomentum from Black Ops 6, the multiplayer of Modern Warfare 3, and much more. This time, all eyes will be on MW4 and its new mechanics.
How to Join the Modern Warfare 4 Beta Test on PC and Consoles
The beta test will be held in two stages and will be historic for the franchise: for the first time, early access will begin immediately after the Call of Duty NEXT stream.
The first stage—early access—will run from August 21st to 25th. It will be available only to players who pre-ordered the game on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, or PC. Pre-ordering automatically enrolls you in early access—no additional codes are required. Nintendo Switch 2 owners are not participating in this phase.
The second phase, the open beta, will run from August 28th to September 1st. It will be available to everyone on all platforms, including the Nintendo Switch 2, regardless of whether they pre-ordered. This will allow owners of the hybrid console to evaluate the game’s performance before purchasing.
The beta includes a variety of multiplayer maps and modes, 19 weapons, new operators, 3v3 skirmishes, and large-scale tactical battles. Available modes include classic Search and Destroy, Kill Block, and Mobility Training. Additionally, viewers of the Call of Duty League Championship 2026 broadcast will be able to receive early access keys to the beta.
Features of Modern Warfare 4 on Nintendo Switch 2
Pre-orders for Modern Warfare 4 for Nintendo Switch 2 begin on August 26, five days after Call of Duty NEXT. The Switch 2 version is being developed by Infinity Ward and Digital Legends.
Switch 2 owners will not be able to participate in the early access beta, but will have access to the open beta starting August 28. Nintendo previously officially confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be released on Switch 2 in October 2026. The Switch 2 version is being developed natively, not ported from other platforms.
At launch, multiplayer will feature 12 main maps set in visually and tactically diverse locations around the world. The Modern Warfare 4 campaign will also be available for early access for all digital pre-orders, starting October 16, a week before the full release. With its release on October 23, Modern Warfare 4 will be available on all platforms simultaneously: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, Battle.net, Microsoft Store), and Nintendo Switch 2. Owners of previous games in the series (released after 2019) receive a 10% discount on the Vault Edition when pre-ordering. The game will also feature the return of the Prestige system and a redesigned movement system.
