Vampire Crawlers throws you into gloomy dungeons without unnecessary explanations. The first runs almost always end the same way — the character dies somewhere on the third floor, and you still didn’t understand why the health bar was melting faster than it had time to recover. It’s not a matter of poor skill. It’s just that there are no familiar potions in the game, and the healing mechanics work quite differently than in most roguelite.

Floor Chicken: garbage or valuable resource?

Destroying light sources — torches, sconces, candles — you can find Floor Chicken. Each such chicken restores exactly 10 HP.

It sounds modest, but if used correctly, it is an important resource. The main rule is not to pick up the chicken right away. It is better to leave it on the floor, clean the floor to the end and return for it before descending to the next level. The point is that overflowing health is impossible: if you pick up a chicken at almost full scale, some of the treatment will simply disappear.

It is difficult to find light sources at first because they are not displayed on the map. To fix this, you need to unlock the Guiding Light relic by defeating the mini-boss on the second floor of the Inlaid Library map. After that, all points of interest, including lights, will appear on the minimap. To pass by this relic is to deliberately complicate your life.

Recovery: The most important investment in meta-progressions

Recovery restores 1 HP after each battle for each leveling level. The maximum rank is the third, meaning the passive treatment ceiling is 3 HP per battle.

That doesn’t sound impressive. But it is precisely this kind of passive tick that decides the outcomes of long runs. Most wounds die not from one catastrophic mistake, but from accumulated damage: a little bit here, a little bit there – and you enter the next difficult battle already weakened. Recovery is just patching up these holes between collisions.

Recovery is unlocked in the Power Ups store, which opens after collecting 250 coins in total. The purchase of the first level costs 500 coins. This is a significant amount at the start, but experienced players advise taking Recovery before any other upgrades — the payoff is worth it.

Pummarola, Bloody Tear and food stall: advanced treatment methods

Vampire Crawlers gameplay exploring dungeon and discovering shrine

When the basic survival rate is built, more powerful sources of HP recovery open up.

The Pummarola card gives +1 HP after a fight, and when combined with a zero card, it gets a multiplier and heals significantly more. The further you put her in the turn queue, the more combo multiplier she gets – this is the basis of card planning in Vampire Crawlers.

Weapon evolutions are treated right in battle. Bloody Tear is created from Whip and Hollow Heart — it hits several rows of enemies and heals with each critical hit. Soul Eater is obtained from Garlic and Pummarola: it costs more in mana, but it guarantees 2 HP for each use, regardless of the criterion.

Finally, if a food stall comes across during the race, you can sacrifice a card from the deck in exchange for 30 HP. This is especially beneficial if there is a weak card in the deck, which only gets in the way — you kill two birds with one stone.

The main mistake of newbies

Many people initially try to solve the problem of survival by pumping maximum HP. But a large amount of health and its recovery are two different things. You can have a huge scale and spend half the race in the red zone, because there is no treatment system. Recovery fills exactly this niche — it returns what has already been lost, and not just increases the buffer.

The optimal strategy is simple: Recovery first, then the rest. Next is to build a build around combo chains, tighten up Pummarola and follow the evolutions. Then the race will begin to feel not like a slow death, but like a real progression deeper into the dungeon.
