The Story of Zed

An Order Built From War

Zed didn’t wait for permission to change Ionia’s traditions. He built the Order of Shadow himself, an organization meant to take the region’s magical and martial arts and turn them into something that could actually push Noxian invaders out — even if that meant abandoning the restraint those traditions were built on.

The Cost of Winning

That willingness to break the rules is what shaped him. Desperation during the war pushed Zed to unlock a forbidden shadow technique, something every bit as corrosive to its wielder as to anyone it’s turned against, and he’s mastered it since without any apparent hesitation. It’s cost him relationships along the way — his former brother Shen no longer considers him kin, and his own student Kayn inherited both his teachings and the same dangerous edge. None of that has slowed him down; anything he judges dangerous to his nation, or to the order he built around protecting it, becomes a target.

His kit is built entirely around that shadow magic. Razor Shuriken has Zed and his shadows throw blades that damage every enemy they pass through. Living Shadow builds energy whenever he and his shadows hit the same target with an ability, and its active dashes a shadow forward that he can later swap into. Shadow Slash has him and his shadows slash everyone nearby, slowing anyone struck by a shadow’s version. Death Mark, his ultimate, makes him untargetable while he dashes to a marked enemy, detonating after a few seconds to repeat a portion of the damage he dealt during that window. Contempt for the Weak, his passive, adds bonus magic damage against already-wounded targets — a fitting trait for someone who finishes what he starts in Ionia, whatever the cost.

Landing a full combo takes some patience beforehand. Holding onto energy and ability cooldowns until the moment he commits to Death Mark tends to maximize its payoff, and placing a Living Shadow just ahead of that engage — or tapping it twice for an instant blink back to it — gives him a way out before anyone can punish the follow-through. Enemies who stack armor tend to blunt him more than most, since much of his bonus damage keys off attack damage items rather than raw magic power, and the stretch right after he throws his shadow out, when his damage, slow, and mobility all depend on it being in play, is when he’s at his most exposed.
